Clary’s Race Rundown
5/31/08
Betsey’s Real Estate
Mother Nature is a feisty ol’ girl. There was a threat of weather in the area last night at Clary’s Speedway in Brinkleyville, NC, but luckily the rain held off and we were able to get in a full night of racing action! Betsey’s Real Estate of Roanoke Rapids, NC was tonight’s sponsor.
We started off with the Mini Stock 4 class, and the 33 of Brian Medlin had the coveted pole position. The 01 of Brian Theide took the lead on lap 1 and never looked back! The caution filled event saw several spins and passes through the grass, plus a great battle for the 5th position between the 14 of Wesley Martin and the 20 of Nevin ‘RedDust’ Twiddy. Brian Theide in that yellow Toyota held a half a straight away lead over the 2nd place car of Kevin Sanford in that 03 to take the win in this 15 lap feature. The 1 of Joseph Falkner came home 3rd followed by Brian Medlin in the 33 and Wesley Marin in the 14. This class is really picking up and I hope to see more and more cars each week!
Our second event of the night was the Super Stock 4 class, and even though the field was only 4 cars, it was quite entertaining to watch our trusty flagman, Charlie Hansen, as he put on a show for the crowd! As Charlie danced around and had a party by himself in the flag stand, the 98 of Wayne Matthews lead from flag to flag, bringing home his first win of the 2008 season, followed by Chris Meier in the 2 and Roger Byrum in the 18. Hope to see more cars in this class, as the SS4’s really put on a great show!
The third event of the night saw our Pure Stock V8’s file onto the track with the new comer of Ryan Toole in his blue 84 Chevy Camaro seeing the red clay of the Bullring for the first time. Ryan made the trip down from Richmond, Virginia and ran against our regular guys like Jerry Jones, Jr., John Van Zandt, Lee Oldaker and Chris Munn. The 0 of Lee Oldaker had the first starting spot for tonight’s feature, and at the drop of the green flag, he shot out to take the lead as a plume of smoke escaped from his Chevy Camaro. We saw him fall back to the 4th spot while the 27 of Richard Hayden took over the lead, followed by the 2 of Chris Munn and the 84 of Ryan Toole. With 5 laps to go, the field tightens up in the front with the 0 of Oldaker, 84 of Toole and 27 of Hayden fighting for position. Coming out of turn 4 on the last lap, we saw the 0, 84 and the 27 side by side and the third place of Lee Oldaker jumped out by a nose at the line to take the win! Hayden came home 2nd and newcomer Ryan Toole finished 3rd. Hope to see that young man back out at the Ring Of Fire soon!
Wow what a field of cars in the Super Street race! Good to see the Green Machine of Russell Boyd back at Clary’s this year! Twelve cars took the green flag in this 20 lap event and the 98 of Maurice Floyd was the pole sitter. The flying 11 of Buddy Isles, Sr. took the lead when the flag dropped and never looked back despite the cautions that seemed to plague this race. The ‘big one’ came at lap 7 and included the 82 of Ricky Dickens, 11jr of Buddy Isles, Jr. and the 16 of Russell Boyd. I’m sure that’s not how he wanted to start his year out! All 3 cars retired to the pits with heavy damage, but hopefully we will see them all back next week. There was a great battle for the lead between the 11 of Isles and the 99 of Eddie Woodruff, but Buddy Isles, Sr. picked up the win. He was followed by Eddie Woodruff in the 99 and the 2 of Greg Munn. Excellent racing all through the field! This class is getting more and more competitive every week!
The Nash Brick Super Late Models took to the track for their 30 lap feature with the 04 of Carl Powell getting the pole position with a fast time of 14:97, followed by the 89 of The Brodnax Shaker JC Clary, Jr. with a time of 15:09. Greensboro’s Ray Tucker started 3rd holding a time of 15:18 and the D8 of Dustin Mitchell with a 15:20. The 89 of JC Clary, Jr. jumped out in the lead at the drop of the flag, followed by Ray Tucker and after a tight battle, Tucker took the lead at the line by mere inches on lap 5. Great driving skills by the 03 of Greg Williams who looped his ride around in turn 2, gassed her and kept going! As tucker stretched out to about a 5 car length lead, the real battle for position was between the 89 of Clary and the D8 of Mitchell, with Clary holding onto 2nd place and Mitchell wanting it! Mitchell finally gets past Clary, and set his sights on Ray Tucker. The 5th and final caution of the night came out for a flat tire on the 89 ride of Clary, and on the restart, we saw Dustin Mitchell fighting Ray Tucker for the lead! Experience won the battle, as Mitchell finally came to realize he was not getting by Tucker, and settled into second place for the closing laps. Ray ‘The Rock’ Tucker brought home the win, followed by Mitchell, Chris Marshall and JC Clary, Jr. Great job to all drivers, and congratulations to Ray Tucker on his 2nd win of the season at Clary’s Speedway!
Our final event of the night was our 15 lap Junkyard Race. Now folks, let me tell you, if you’ve never seen a junkyard race, you need to! Your sides will hurt from laughing so hard, ‘cus I know mine do today! Tonight’s competitor’s included Kevin Harris in a blue Buick, Phil Hux also in a Buick, Jonathan Dunlow in his ‘Hot Rod Lincoln’ and Lauren Price in a burgundy Taurus. After the water truck thoroughly soaked the track from top to bottom, our fearsome foursome took to the track! Jonathan took the lead going into one, but for some reason, he forgot to straighten her up because he kept going around! Kevin Harris passed him on the outside, taking the lead, and holding onto the lead spot until lap 11. Lauren took the smart route and drove the top side the entire race, making great time and staying out of trouble. I’m not quite sure exactly what Jonathan and Phil were doing because instead of racing they were spinning and slipping and sliding all over the track! It was quite amusing! Kevin Harris unfortunately had his radiator go south, relinquishing the lead to Lauren as he bailed out of the passenger side door! Lauren had pretty smooth sailing the final laps of the race and brought home the $400 big check! I saw her in the pits afterward and she was still toting that big check around with her! Grin on her face was bright enough to light up the darkest night! Way to go Lauren!! You go girl!
We’ll be back next week folks for a full schedule of events with X-Stream Auto Wash as our sponsor. We will be running SLM, LLM, SS, PSV8, SS4, MS4. We look forward to seeing you all at The Ring Of Fire!
