View Full Version : Speeding In The Pits

I think that the track needs to do something about these drivers that come in the pits wide open. Somebody is going to get hurt. Last night when one driver came flying by there were people standing everywhere. I thought that cars were not allowed to do that. I mean you are given two laps to change a tire there is no need to come flying in the pits.

Ms 97;
It happens at a lot, and a lot, of tracks and one of these days something TRAGIC is going to happen, its got too, the odds are stacked against the track. Poor lighting in the pits, and inattentive kids in the pits, its a tragedy looking for a place to happen, regardless of what track it is. They just better hope they have a good insurance POLICY. But until then you are going to keep having STUPID DRIVERS do it. I swear some cars run faster in the pits then they do on the track.

well its the pits. you shouldn't have "inattentive kids" there. they should be in the stands.

everybody child or adult don't pay attention 100% of the time. I've seen close calls with STUPID ADULTS as well as kids.

racechaser, there was a caution for debris on the track in turn one and the flag man went and got it and a car was coming and when the flag man went to bend over to get it, the car was there and had to slam on brakes to keeo from hitting him. the car should have slowed down cause the caution was clearly out.

woe, not good,
thats something each and every driver needs to honor. Caution wasn't put out race under.
now heres the question, is it a race back deal when the caution comes out.

Not laying all the blame on the driver here, the guy with the flag was just a guilty. I saw this track employee walk onto the track several times while cars were not yet slowed up. There has to be a use of common sense by both parties.

Were I was at there were no kids just adults. It's the point of it. Drivers should be penalized for speeding in the pits. People have their cars everywhere and all it takes is a little mistake you hit a parked car or a person for that matter. Drivers should be careful coming in the pits, even if you are mad. Anger goes away but you can not bring someone's life back!

I have heard this argument stated several times. IT IS THE PITS!!!!!!
Spectators/Fans should understand what that means and take some personal responsibility. Now if speeding happens cause a driver is Pissed or just taking it to the staging lanes then you could have a different argument. But if you are talking about under green/caution flags, then its the drivers territory and not ours.
ITS THE PITS!!!! NOT THE GRANDSTAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The caution was clearly on the lights and the flag when the #20 car almost hit the track man. I under stood why you almost hit him . He was the only thing you didn,t hit. Cars were in turn three and you were in turn one. Good job just keep it between the walls.

This is so true when we the fans are in the pit we are invading the drivers territory and we should either watch for cars or keep our butts on the bleachers. Not complain about what they do unless as said they are p.o. and are making a complete idiot of themselves. My two cents not worth much but given anyway.

I agree with the rest of your post, but IMO, a driver needs to take it easy in the pits, AT ALL TIMES. There is nothing that can be gained by flying into or out of the pits, that is worth someone getting hurt. That is why nascar has pit road speed limits.
Don't take this the wrong way. The pits are a dangerous place. Everyone needs to be careful, including drivers who are pumped up and/or mad.
And for the record, I'm not OSHA. I am a driver. A driver that does not bring children, or people that think the world revolves around them, into the pits.

I'm saying everyone should be alert while in the pits. The cars have the right away. Yes drivers need to pay attention also. But if I'm in the pits and I get hit by a car/with a driver even speeding but paying attention, then it is my fault.
Nascar has speed limits for the crews safety fine if that's how they want it. But there also isn't fans, kids and others just walking down pit road either. I'm also sure a car hasn't reached 45-55 MPH in the pits at CLR either.

10-4, I think we're on the same page.
I'm talking about guys that come in the pits sideways, hauling a##, slinging dirt and rocks, sending drivers and crew members scrambling in fear. LOL

Any race car or driver should be under control at all times
I would like it just as much if spectators couldn't come into the business section of the pits anyway. If they have a section just for the spectators cool, but just separate from the competitors pits. Some don't even give you enough room to work on the car or they want to talk to the driver and other things. After the races go for it, Its beer drinking time now. The works over and the fun starts. You damn sure can't go to the dugout or set on the bench on the sidelines by just paying $10.00 more admission price.

James Upchurch has asked the drivers not to speed in the pits, but this year it is becoming a constant thing. We have a cadet class at CLR that starts at 10 years old, and they are out there trying to learn how to race and have fun just like all the other drivers. Older drivers should be setting a good example for these children. No one would like to see anything happen to anyone out there.

I don't have a problem with kids in the pits.
If a child is mature enough to be safe in the pits, thats fine. If they are not, then it is up to the parents to keep them safe. IMO, it is up to the parents to decide if their child is mature enough to watch out for themselves in a dangerous place.
What I have a problem with, is parents that expect others to do their job.(Or don't care if their job gets done at all.)

I agree, when I went this past weekend my 8yr old daughter wanted to go with me. That was a surprise..LOL When we ventured down into the pits I gave her a crash course on staying out of the way of cars and whatever you do DO NOT walk in the center where all the cars travel through. Be alert and ready to MOVE!!! I opted out of taking any photos just because she wanted to go and I could give 100% of my attention to her and what was going on. I see it all the time some parents take their kids to the track and let them run around like they were at a daycare or something, more in the grandstand area than the pits but to say the least, the pits is no place for your kids to be running around unsupervised, not even for a split second.

and Dwayne you are to be commended for putting the safety of your child first, so many do as you say and think the track is a playground, it's a race track......When I was growing up my Daddy took me to races and I knew that I better not get off the belachers unless it was to go to the bathroom or concession stand and I also knew if we were in the pits I had better stay with him and well out of the way of the cars....he taught me to watch the races and enjoy them, we had plenty of room to run and romp at home......
Dale made a good point, children are our future racers and they need to understand the inner workings of the cars, the pits, and the track so that hopefully a spark will be lit and a fire and passion for the sport will grow from it, BUT kids are not learning about racing when they are running all over like they are in their back yards......kinda like taking them to the movies and letting them climb all over the seats......

AMEN! For the parents who do keep an eye on their kids, you are to be commended. I noticed the last time I was in the pits this little boy was beside his daddy's trailer. He had him a little racetrack hollowed out in the dirt and stayed right there beside the trailer out of the way the whole time. When it came time to race, he was up on the observation part of the trailer, watching. But one too many times, I've seen kids who want to stand in the way or walk out in the right of way that the cars have. It's a racetrack, not a social gathering. There will be time before and after the race to talk and carry on with friends.

I totally agree with you. There are some parents out there that do not care what their children do. When we take our girls they know they have to stay right beside our car trailer and they can not go anywhere else or they can't come back. It's all in how you watch your child and make them listen. The last time my daughter went to the track she sat beside the car trailer and played in the dirt the whole night, and never even moved. So there are parents out there that make their children stay where they are suppose to. Most children that grow up around racing know that they are suppose to stay out of the way.

I agree, children of parents who grew up around racing are generally very aware of how to behave at a track and where to be and when to be there....my nephews know that they are to go no farther than the front of the truck to the back of the trailer without having an adult with them and if they do not only will they not come back, they will be in way more trouble than their little minds can imagine........
