Eric Keck charges to the victory in The Virginia Sprint Seies 2008 season debut at the 3/8ths mile clay oval of County Line Raceway. Repeat winners for the 2008 season were Victor May in Super Stock Four Cylinder, Gary Dillon in Pure Stock Four Cylinder, and Joshua Bryant in Cadet. Others adding their name to the list of winners for the early season were Chris Ray in Thunder & Lightning and Gary Whitley in Pure Stock V-8.


Eric Keck and French Grimes advance from their last row starting positions to battle for the lead in the 305 Winged Sprints event . The #42 of Keck takes the victory by about 2 feet after the #F1 of Grimes made a charge off the final turn. They battled the entire 25 laps dicing through the competition. Jerald Harris manuevered his #J9 into third position overtaking the #5 of veteran racer Satch Worley. Worley in his #5 held on for fourth. The #95 of Billy Norfleet managed to take the fith spot on the final lap. Heat rcae winners were Bill Rice and Mike Marr.


The Super Stock Four Cylinder division saw the #35 Toyota of Victor May make it back to back victories. Zebulon’s May led the entire 20 lap feature. Capturing the second position was Saratoga’s Wayne Potter in his #1 Mustang. Bailey’s Bill Winstaed managed to cross the stripe in third in his #97 Mustang. Scott Baines came back from a mid-race pit stop to salvage fourth in the #7 Mustang. Fifth went to Nathan Cole. May won the heat race.


In Pure Stock Four Cylinder action, it was the #82 Toyota of Wilson’s Gary Dillon taking victory number 2 of the new season. Elm City’s Michael Webb placed his #9 Mustang into the second position. 2007 points champion Brandon Whitley, of Wilson, made his season debut by placing third in the #08 Pinto. Wendell’s Carlton Toney powered his #2 Toyota to a fourth place finish. Elm City’s Jimmy Holcombe rounded out the top five in his #88 Mustang. Dillon and Junior Johnson won the qualifying races.


Zebulon’s Chris Ray made a pass with two laps to go to get by race leader Britches Liles. The #R5 of Ray had made several attempts at a pass earlier in the ferature, but was denied. It was the first victory in nearly a year for the Monte Carlo of Ray. Bailey’s Liles was able to hole on to finish second in the #L2 Camaro after suffering a deflatting right front tire. Third went to the hard charging #84 Chevrolet of Mark McDaniels. McDaniels came from his last place starting position after a last lap spin in his heat race. Elm City’s Alan Worrells brought his #28 Camaro home in fourth. Rounding out the top five was the the #61 Monte Carlo of Rocky Mount’s Wade Ferrell. Ray and Ferrell won the heat races.


The Pure Stock V-8 contest proved to be another exciting battle. Stantonsburg’s Gary Whitley in his #21 Monte Carlo used a front row starting spot to take the early lead and hold on til the final circuit. Jerry Williams, of Snow Hill, made a late race pass to take over the second position in his #44 Cutlass. The #67 Monte Carlo of Battleboro’s Ben James had to settle for third. Battleboro’s Michael Lamm in the #96 Monte Carlo and Snow Hill’s David Saul’s rounded out the top five. Whitley and James earned the front row by their victories in the qualifying races.


The final event of the evening proved to be worth the wait as Wilson’s Joshua Bryant and Elm City’s Austin Holcombe put on a great driving exhibition. The #24 Nissan of Bryant used a great restart to take the lead from the #8 Mustang of Holcombe. Holcombe made several attempts to regain the lead, but was unsuccessful. Wilson’s Stillman Heath placed third in his #43 Mustang.


The Late Model’s return for racing action next Saturday, May 17th. Also doing battle on the new clay surface at County Line Raceway will be the Pure Stock Four Cylinder, Pure Stock V-8, Cadet, Thunder & Lightning, and Super Stock Four Cylinder. See everyone at ‘The Line’ next weekend.
