Let's talk about the elephant in the room
This kinda came up in another thread, and I do like a good SUPER race occasionally, BUT ;
Can SUPERS make or break your local dirt track ?
Does the SUPER Late Model class support itself ?
Does it draw enough fans to support itself ?
Would the track close without them ?
Would there be more LIMITED cars if SUPERS did not run ?
Where does the money come from to pay them ?
Were SUPERS originally meant to run in some type of series with the best of the best ?

Joel I personally like watching all the Classes from Supers to young guns..BUT I have seen tracks that have supers give the supers a night off and the fan count dropped in half. I guess it also depends on the track.
When you go to the big shows a different tracks, when the Supers are finished, even if they race first alot of the fans start to clear out. Why? Because they are only there for the Supers.
If I went to Hammerdown this Saturday and they only have 7 or 8 late models and 20 super streets I'd like that just as good as if they had 20 late models. Thats just me and my 2 cents
They sure don't make or break County Line Raceway. It seems like the folks running FMS have already weighed in on this based on their actions. They only run them occasionally. I think if FMS did something with the track / race conditions, they'd be successful without the supers. They just need a racier track.
I love the supers. I think it would be kind of cool to see a 4-5 track series based right here in Eastern NC. It would be great to see how our locals go against a broader field of regional (again, Eastern NC) locals. We see a little bit of that as some of the supers run at Dublin, FMS, and now HDS. It would be cool to build more organization around that and include Clary's and CLR. Unfortunately, it'll never happen as a couple of these tracks run supers weekly. I also guess that one of the downsides to this would be the tracks not hosting the super series could potentially lose a few fans to the hosting track of the week.
Then again, I have no clue as to what I'm talking about.

The trend now seems to be going in the direction of tracks running Super's only in series events, or special shows. This is an age old question, and I am not gonna say one way or the other, because I really dont know what the answer is...... It may work at some tracks but not others........... The only way a track would ever find out is try and see what happens.

They use to have a local touring series for the supers...Its the Carolina Clash. It was just County Line and Fayetteville the first year, the second year it stopped being a local touring division cause drivers still had to travel 3 hours to other tracks which was the opposite of why the clash was formed...so drivers didn't have to travel to race. The clash has turned into a good thing, but it no longer helps the locals

IMO, SLM's are a touring class. Weekly promoters need to re-think everything.

Do you think the local boys would travel with the CLASH if they could not run local ? And would this help or not help the CLASH !!

That's kind of what I'm saying. The 4-5 tracks in the area would all agree not to run supers weekly. It would be more economical than the current Clash because travel would be limited to eastern NC. The tracks in the western portion of the state could do the same. End the season with a bash by combining the two series for a state championship of some sort. Fun to think about, even though it will never happen.
I hope this is on topic, but has anyone thought about how long HDS will be able to run a mixed field of supers and lates? Or do I misunderstand what's going on down there?

It does get back to the point about running SUPERS or not !
Right now though, it depends on which SUPERS show up and which LIMITED cars show up. You know , the fast from one can run with the not as fast of the other.

JMHO. Supers have gotten so expensive that not many local guys can compete (even against a local who has the bucks). Unless something is done to keep costs down, I think it will eventually become a touring class (probably with several different series) just like some series before it (Grand National for instance), or they will be limited to fewer and fewer tracks like the 410 sprints. I think it will take quite a few years for this to happen, and by the time it does, the "limiteds" will probably be running as fast as the supers are now. The same thing is happening on the asphalt with the late model stock cars. Of course, I just got off the machine with the electrodes buzzing the back of my head so I may have no idea what I'm talking about.

I don't see how tracks can keep paying a Super purse weekly with the current economic situation. And I don't think the local guys would start touring with the Clash if Super racing was eliminated (well maybe some would, but not many). Most would probably drop back to the Limited class. I also think the Clash has expanded about as far as it can, as they are traveling some great distances for being a regional series.
That being said, there's nothing like watching the Supers run, so I would hate to see them go away completely. I agree with RB, someone should start a local series. All the tracks would have to be within 2 hours of a central location - for example Raleigh. CLARYs, CLR, FMS, Dublin, & HDS for example. Since tracks don't work together, someone on the outside would have to create a Business plan for an idea like this, and prove to all these tracks why it would benefit them to participate. Sounds like a job for Hansen...

You would have to have the state championship somwehere where everyone agreed on for that to work.
I think limiteds like Wille Milliken, Shawn Harrell, DJ Tyndall and Dustin Mitchell would be able to hang with the SLM at Hammerdown. Maybe those guys will show up this weekend and we'll be able to find out

Well I know times are tuff. But the answer to me is simple. If you want SLM's you have to pay for SLM's. Thats fans and tracks.

Ten supers per week a'int enough. If a track is trying to support the class weekly, the super late model teams need to make the effort to support the track, too. It has to be a two-way street.

To be completely honest.................... I think this would be an achievable series.......... I truely believe that the current owners/leasors at all of the tracks named, would be interested in running a "Eastern Carolina Super Late Model Series"........Once a month at the four tracks named.....If there is a 5th week let that be an off week for the guys to spend with thier family...... Let the series keep all of the entry fees, for the points fund, the tracks should be able to make the payout with the gate tickets (INCREASED TICKET PRICES)....
I think one of the only set backs would be, alot of fans would follow the series and would not call one track a home........... But I think it would work.
If I could figure out a way to make some money, I might would try and put it together.................. But we all know making money and the racing business do not go together..........

and sometimes this does not even work.............. $20,000.00 to win and less than 25 cars............
But first you'd need buy-in from the two tracks that run them weekly... and I don't see that happening.
Someone (Hansen), needs to get on the horn to all of the SLM regulars in the eastern portion of the state to see how committed they would be.

Charlie hit the biggest fear that a track owner would have with a regional series with all the tracks so close together. That is how many fans would go to the SLM track of that week when the longest drive between tracks is only about 2.5 hours. I belivie a lot more would than we think.
Me personally with my commitment to Clary's and the relationship I have formed with the other divisions drivers and teams I wouldn't of course. But trust me if you throw those two out the window, I would be were ever the SLM's were at.

and I think as any "TRUE DIRT FAN" would...........The ones that would watch the weekly shows without the Supers for the most part would be somehow affiliated with a car somehow.
