Last season (2007) it was Catdaddy Clint Smith, whom did it first, by racing everywhere he got a chance, while on tour with the World of Outlaw Late Model series, but this year the nod goes to the Hurricane Earl Pearson Jr. The multi. & reigning Lucas Oil Dirtcar series champion has again "it for the cycle," as it's known in baseball (http://www.whowon.com/sresults.asp?SanctionID=1198&StoryID=245290#) terminology, in the National Rankings Top 5 tallying standings for Dirt Super Late Models. Collecting all tallied positions, first thru fifth, is the feat, within the guidelined $10,000 (and above) system. The familiar black & blue # 44 "LifeLong Locks, Lucas Oil Products, AllStar Performance, Sunoco Racing Fuels " sponsored, MasterSbilt chassis (http://www.whowon.com/sresults.asp?SanctionID=1198&StoryID=245290#), Larry Wallace powered, Dodge Charger which is owned by NASCAR (http://www.whowon.com/sresults.asp?SanctionID=1198&StoryID=245290#) champion Bobby Labonte, has the most top five appearances so far in 2008 with two (2) National Rankings wins, one runner-up finish and four more top five's (a 3rd, 4th and two 5th place finishes) for a total of seven placements within the Top 5 finishing cycle. In 2007 Pearson Jr. along with the Real Deal Don O’Neal joined Smith as the first three racers of the season to hit the Top 5 tallying cycle. This season Pearson’s run of the gauntlet is rite at a month ahead of Smiths’ last season mark.

National Rankings points leader Billy Moyer whom is still flanked by Jimmy Owens (by 65 points), has six (6) guidelined $10,000. or higher wins, so far, in 2008 and has three runner-up finishes to his credit. Mr. Smooth has garnered one (1) 3rd and one (1) 5th place finish also to his credit, and lack the 4th place nod to become the second racer this season to run the gauntlet. As for the O’Show, the Newport, Tennessee pilot just needs a 5th place finish to complete the cycle, yet has collected five (5) wins also, to go with his two runner-up tallies, a 3rd place nod and his three (3) fourth place finished. The lead duo of the National Rankings is currently tied for the "most" TOp 5 tallies, at 11 a piece. For those history buffs out there, last season it was Scott Bloomquist and Shannon Babb heading up the National Rankings at this time of the season, with a mere 20 points separating the two in the standings. Speaking of Black Sunshine: the 2007 National RANKING champion currently lacks the same 4th place nod as Moyer to run the cycle, yet has only obtained two (2) victories, along with four (4) runner-up finishes, along with just two other Top 5’s (a 3rd and a 5th). Bloomquist is currently in 4th in the standings, behind new Colossal champ Steve Francis (http://www.whowon.com/sresults.asp?SanctionID=1198&StoryID=245290#).

As for the Kentucky Colonel, a 5th place nod is missing from his Top 5 resume, much like his closest competitor Owens, who sits directly ahead, with just an 85 point advantage. Pearson Jr. has the final nod of the Top 5 in the National Rankings heading into the 27th, 28th, and 29th (guidelined) races of the season, this weekend. As for last season Gauntlet Champ: Clint Smith, he is sitting just inside the National Rankings Top 10 (9th) yet is only a runner-up finish away from hitting for the cycle. The racer farthest from the cycle and highest ranked is 10th place Georgia Giant Shane Clanton, whom is missing a victory, a 3rd and a 4th respectfully. This weekend National Rankings follows events in Kentucky, North Carolina and Missouri. Two Lucas Oil series races (paying $9,999) race at KY Lake Motor Speedway, Friday and Saturday night, while the Carolina Clash races it’s largest weekend to date at the Cleveland County Speedway in Lawndale, NC Saturday. The World of Outlaws Late Model series is at the I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, MO, Saturday night with a $10,000. to-Win big event, that kicks off Mega-May, looking ahead at the Diamond Nationals and the Show-Me 100 later this month.
