March 29, 2008
The 2008 season began Saturday nite at the Winchester Speedway as the Late Models, Semi-Late Models, Pure Stocks and 4-Cylinders all raced regular shows. The stands were packed, the air was cold, and the racing was hot as the first night is in the books. With the weather almost winter cold, 88 cars entered the nights events.
The first feature event of the evening saw the DeHaven’s Well Drilling 4-Cylinders take the green with Delmas Moreland jumping to the early advantage as the rest of the field chased him down. The first of only two race stoppages occurred on the 6th lap when Bobby Burton’s #23 Ford slowed to a stop with a flat tire in the fourth turn. Allowing the field to once again close on Delmas Moreland. Allen Whitt, Jr. began to work all over the #12c Toyota as the race wound down. The last of only two cautions coming out with just 3 laps when the #74 of Tommy Whitt slowed to a stop, allowing Allen Whitt to close one last time on Delmas’ bumper, but it wasn’t to be as Delmas Moreland took the first 4-Cylinder checkered of the season with Allen Whitt running second; Chuckie Johnson, Chuck Johnson, and Butch Mayo rounded out the top five. Heats went to Chuck Johnson, Mark Digges, and Rodney Hoffman, Roger Whitlock would take the Consi.
Next up the Gasoline Alley Auto and Truck Sales Late Models took to the track, Johnathan DeHaven and Brian Tavener would start from the front row. DeHaven would take the lead at the green in his white and orange #13D Ford. The second caution would come out after one lap was complete when Omps would get squirrely and Gerald Davis, Mike Hardy, Matt Hardy, and Greg Elrod would be caught up in the mess that would ensue. The 25 lap feature would see the caution fall some 8 times by race end. The race saw Bo Feathers and Denny Bonebrake begin to assert their strength as the race continued, DeHaven holding his line and the lead as the laps wound down. Bonebrake began a hard charge and on lap 21 he would take the lead coming out of the fourth turn, he would not lead another lap as in turn two contact between DeHaven and Bonebrake saw Bonebrake spin and DeHaven once again back in the lead. This left Feathers the last challenger as the green flag flew with four to go, Feathers would use several high side charges in the waning laps before having to settle for the second spot as Johnathan DeHaven would collect the win; Kris Eaton made a strong run in his debut with Shutts racing to take third, Davis and Tavener would round out the top five. Heats for the Late Model class went to Gerald Davis and Bo Feathers.
Next up on the card were the Niningers Tire and Auto Center Pure Stocks saw Matt Kerns take the early lead over Buddy Wilson, Kerns looking strong in the lead despite several challenges by Wilson. The Pure Stock division featured green flag racing throughout the field as the race was only stopped by one caution when Ricky Henry suffered problems bringing out the caution with six to go, setting the fast machine of Donnie Kenney right behind race long leader Matt Kerns. Kenney would battle hard with Kerns and with but 4 laps to go Kerns would ride high up the track and Kenney would take the lead with Buddy Wilson in tow. Wilson gave Kenney all he could but at the checkered itw as Donnie Kenney, Wilson was second, Bobby Franklin, Mike Rose, and Matt Kerns rounded out the top five. Heats for the Pure Stocks went to Eddie McClellan, Mike Carter, and Donnie Kenney
Rounding out the night were the Eagle Auto Parts Semi-Late division. Bubby Tharp, Jr took the lead from the green and looked strong in the early going on what was to be a caution filled 15 lap event. The worst of the nights caution was a second lap collision that blocked the frontstretch and included Jeff Sweeney, Jon Painter, and James Harrison amongst others. By lap four Tharp saw his challenger and it was the Lester Nichols owned #11 driven by defending Winchester Speedway Late Model champion Allen Brannon, Brannon took the lead and Tharp battling back lost control though he would recover to finish fifth by race end. From that point on it was the Brannon show as he would never be challenged over the remainder of the race, surviving three more cautions over the last 11 laps to take the win. Sean Dawson, Jeff Sweeney, Don Woodruff, and Bubby Tharp, Jr would round out the top five.
Next week all four divisions return for a regular show sponsored by The Stop, Johnny Theo’s and Echo Water Systems of Virginia.
