BRINKLEYVILLE - Saturday's $10,000 Super Late Model East Coast Clash ended the 2005 season at Clary's Speedway. Thirty six SLM cars from all over the country'e Eastern region, including South Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware and even Indiana made the trek to the fastest 1/3 mile dirt track in Eastern North Carolina. It was also the night to honor the season track champions and the runner ups in all divisions.

Track officials made several changes to this event to accommodate the fans and drivers. With gates opening earlier and heat races instead of qualifying all cars made for a early night for everyone. Hot laps began at 2 p.m. while SLM qualifying started at 4 p.m. The last checkered flag dropped just past midnight for the last time this season.

Over 210 cars in all seven divisions passed through the registration booth, making every feature event slam packed for racing. All supporting feature events were set at 15 laps or 20 minutes of racing, but the SLM had two 10 lap consolation races, the top eight qualifiers 10-lap dash for cash and a 75 lap feature event. Before the night was out time prevailed in several events. Only five laps were completed in the Pure Stock V-8 division.

Pennslyvania's Kirk Ryan, with a 14.998 lap, qualified for the pole and picked up an extra $500 while Delaware driver Booper Bare was on the outside with a 15.002 lap. The top 16 positions were locked in on qualifying and the next six positions would come from the top three drivers in each consolation race. Jim Burnheise, Ed Gibbons, Allen Brannon, Mark Pettyjohn, Roger Lucas and Brent Robinson were the top finishers and made the move to the feature. The track provisional went to Johnny Stovall and Kent Wright.

Booper Bare walked the dogs in the dash for cash and took home the $1,000 prize while Ryan finished second. In victory lane Bare drew a No. 2 ball, therefore the top two finishers would invert and Ryan would still start on pole with Bare on the outside in the feature event.

Buddy Isles Sr. continued to smoke the field in the Super Street division. The 15-lap event was filled by six cautions with Isles leading every lap. Scott Pearce finished second while Michael Morris finished third. Fifteen-year-old Monk Newsome made his debut in the No. 71 car and finished sixth out of eight cars.

Tempers flared in the Sportsman feature. Walker Authur, Frank Munn and Steve Pearson all wanted the top spot from the drop of the green. Pearson prevailed this time. Munn fought hard on lap six coming off turn four and got spun around. Pearson, Rick Johnson and Roger Bell were running that order just past half way, when going down the backstretch, Johnson went for the lead. Pearson never gave up and contact was made and all top three contenders were dropped in the field. This opened the door for Tater Liles to take home the win, his first at Clary's Speedway.

Fourteen cautions, 24 SLM and 75 laps all added up to some exciting dirt track racing. Cars were stretched from one end of the track to the other, with some side by side racing and wheel to wheel rubbing. Local track driver Kent Wright had to use Roger Bibee's car for the feature and his night ended early (21st place) along with other track driver Johnny Stovall (22nd).

Track regular Ray Tucker's night ended on lap 28 and gave him an 18th-place finish. Other local driver Danny Hudson also had trouble and exited the track on lap 44, finishing 15th.

Ryan jumped out front from the start, but Bare was all in his mirror. After about five laps and some side by side racing Bare made the pass and floored the gas pedal. At the mandatory red flag stop for gas on lap 35 only 18 cars remained in the field. It was about lap 45 when Don “Real Deal” O'Neal made his move. Starting in the ninth pace position, O'Neal raced side by side with Steve Blackburn for third place on laps 44 and 45. It was then he made the pass and set his eyes on second place of Ryan. With three caution flags slowing down the cars, O'Neal just didn't have enough for Bare, who held off the late charge of O'Neal to pick up his second win of the season.

Four Cylinder Modified track points champion Dennis Overby seemed to be in the right place at the right time. Sheet medal was flying and the race ended due to the time limit expiring with Overby winning. William Vaughan finished second with Justin Pinno finishing third.

Derek Pendergrass picked up the win in the Super Stock Four Cylinder division's feature event. Jonathan Thomas finished second and Deuce Wright was third.

Brad Cooper lost his right rear tire and several cars were taken out early in the Pure Stock V8 feature event. But then again only five laps made up the time expiring event. Jason Cutts continued his streak of winning at least one race a season by picking up the five lap win. Track points champion Ricky Dickens finished second with Joe Scarbrough finishing third.

Brent Hudson picked up the win in the Junkyard division, while second place Johnny Richardson claimed he won. In the end, the official results posted Hudson with the win and Richardson second with Jerry Jones third.

Track owners Monk and son J.C. Clary along with promoter Marcia Reed would like to thank all the drivers and fans for their support for the past season and making it a successful one.

“We hope to see you all back next year at Clarys Speedway in Halifax County for some great dirt track racing,” said Reed.

Where did Randy Wreen get over 210 cars from? If you count all 36 SLM plus the support classes I only get 123. That means there was 77 that never came out on the track if 210 is correct.

I maybe stand corrected.. I report what was given to me by track officials... If you notice I take track photo's, write the story, sell photo's, this week brought in the extra concession trailer and try and be in every spot at every second at the track. So if it wasn't 210 I stand corrected and am sorry you lost any sleep over that total. The pay is free if anyone would like to help next season.:Zippit:

oneal and eckert or two of the more fan friendly bigtimers. I had no problems getting eckert along wth oneal to sign a couple of 8x10's that i bought from randy sat. He took the pics durning hot hots ran back to roanoke rapids and developed them. So not only did I see oneal and eckert race in my backyard, I got the signed proof that they were here lol
