Yes it is finally true that on April 26 th 2008, Friendship Speedway will be going back to dirt and running on Saturday nights, running Fastrak Crates, Super Streets, Four Cylinders, and U Cars weekly.

Thanks to Friendship owners, they have leased the track to Dennis Woods and Phil Hall. Phil says, “Dennis and I couldn't be happier over finally getting things worked out. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we are up for the task.

Dennis and I started working together in the mid 80's until early 2000 racing season. This is something that Dennis and I, along with Joe Atkins who owns Tobacco Special Racing Team, who I drove for at the time, talked about numerous times on leasing a track and running special events. In the early 2000, Dennis decided to move back to Boonville to another garage to have his parts business closer to his house. In June of 2000, I began a job that required working more therefore I could not devote the time to the racing that needed to be, so I left the Tobacco Special Racing.

Today I still love to drive a race car as well as I did the first time I ever drove one. But the next best thing to driving is to promote a race track. I have never promoted a race in my life, but after 30 some years of racing, I feel like I have seen enough rights and wrongs sitting at the tracks to promote one from a driver and spectator point of view.

So I will be promoting it, Dennis will handle all the paper work and financial end of it. There will be an 11:30 curfew. If it is not over by around 11:15, then, it will be a green, white, checkered and we're going to the house. Our goal is to be finished by 11pm. That is one thing that I will try to make sure to happen. There will be a lot of special things for the fans.

We will give away 1 free supper each race in the stands and the pits. We will be bringing the Super Late Model Cars in at least 10 to 12 times. Carolina Clash will be there on September 6 th and possible 1 or 2 more dates. I will be talking to Ken Schrader and Dave Blaney and hopefully bring some of the NASCAR stars in at a later date. On May 24 th , we will not run on Saturday night but we will be running on Monday the 26 th . We will do the same thing on July 5 th and run on July 7 th .

We had to do it that way because Wytheville and 311 have big races already planned that weekend. Fred Brown, at Wytheville, is a good friend of mine, also the same with 311, Bobby Johns. We will not be racing against Gary and his staff at Rollin Thunder. Those Monday night races will start practice at 6:15 and practice will be limited. The races will start at 7pm sharp so everything will be over by 10pm and everyone can get home to go to work the next morning.
On the Monday night races, we will hopefully be bringing back the train races that everyone likes so much. Dennis and I are hoping that dirt track fans, drivers and crews, will come out and support us on opening night. Parking places up on the hill will go on sale March 19 th .
Also, we will start selling billboards on the 19 th . Anyone wanting to sponsor a race or pole position, halfway leader, hard luck, can contact us. Anyone who sponsors a race will receive 4 free VIP passes for the booth. We will appreciate all the sponsors and billboards that we can get. We are also looking for sponsors for each division. In closing, Dennis, the staff, and I would like to thank Gray Coble, Scott Rigney, David Taylor, Dobson Trucking, Moody Enterprises, Larry Lee, Larry Long & Clint Elkins. We hope that all the car owners, drivers, and sponsors will come and help make this first year back on dirt a successful season.

Fastrak Late Models will run Fastrak Rules.
Street Stock, 4 Cylinders and U cars will run the same rules as Rolling Thunder Speedway in Ararat, Virginia.
Our Tech Man will be Jason Smoot. Call Jason after 7pm at 336-981-4148. Anyone wanting to run the Train race on Memorial Day, please contact Jason and let him know.
Anyone wanting to sponsor a race or a billboard, or buy a parking place, call Dennis Wood at 336-244-5278 or Phil Hall at 336-401-2051.Our website will be up and running in a few days. Anyone wanting to contact us can do so at info@friendshipmotorspeedway.net (info@friendshipmotorspeedway.net)anytime.

I hope they reconsider having it on Saturday. That is setting up to fail IMO. I'm a race fan of any track and to be honest there isn't really another track close by that races on Friday night except Tri-County. On Saturday nights they are going to compete with both Bowman Gray and Hickory locally. I know I've been going to Wythe Raceway on Saturdays and I don't plan to stop. I had been going to Friendship on Fridays and I'll still probably go a time or 2 on Saturday but I'll still go to Wythe more than I do Friendship despite it being an hour longer of a drive.

I would like to respectfully disagree with you. It's been my experience that there are dirt fans and drivers, then there are asphalt fans and drivers. The majority attend either dirt of asphalt. Now I know there are some who do both, but overall, the two distinct groups is what I've seen. In that case, we can throw out Hickory and Bowman-Gray as tracks to have to compete against on Saturday nights.

Regarding Wythe and 311, of course there will be some drivers and fans who will remain loyal to those tracks, but I honestly don't see a failure of Friendship being due to this. It looks like Friendship has recognized that these tracks occasionally put on big shows and they're working around it instead of fighting it.

A lot of unhappy drivers with 311 found that Rolling Thunder was a great alternative. Now with the news of Friendship following Fastrak and Rolling Thunder rules, we have the perfect combination. Rolling Thunder on Friday nights and Friendship on Saturdays. I think this is the combination that will set it up to succeed, not fail. Plus, Friendship had a huge fan base as well as a lot of drivers when it was dirt and I'm sure a lot are eager to get back there. But again, this is just my humble opinion. :01Happy:

Agreed Zacharygirl. In regard to competing with Follow the Leader Stadium, i mean, Bowman Gray Stadium, if you can get bowman gray fans to come out just once, they will be back. And like you said, there will be fans that remain loyal to Wythe and 311. I for one am really looking forward to seeing a race at friendship, but will probably go to 311 more often just because its a lot closer. But i'm also glad to hear that yall are working with other tracks on the schedule with monday night races and things like that, maybe yall can help promote each other on big nights and get the crowd numbers up everywhere.

BTW RJ, tell them do some advertising in the Winston-Salem area, (radio 104.1 or 93.1 if they can) because like I said, if you can get some bowman gray fans there they'll keep coming!

it's great news friendship is going back to dirt it made me sick when they paved it and even sicker when i went up there and tried to watch a race it wasn't interesting at all now i can drive 5 miles instead of 50 just to see a dirt race i been hoping for this the last 2 years and finally it's happened and i wont miss a race.

A little food for thought with the Wythe deal. Fred has an awesome facility and I'm not throwing off on him at all, but compare his purse to that of Friendship, Ararat, and 311 with all of them being Fastrack santioned now. I know of at least 7 or 8 crate cars in this area that will not be at Wythe with the lower purse and fuel prices being the way they are. Wythe is gonna have to pay more if they wanna keep their cars. And we all know the fans go where the cars go. They are setting up for anything but a failure.

Just curious, Will they remove the pavement at friendship or will they just cover it with clay. Hope they rip up that pavement myself so they don't ever reconsider going back to pavement.

hoping they were going to rip it up as well nothing done yet i'd say there probably just cover it up don't see why anyone would try asphalt again anyway it didn't work at all but i never thought they would try it the first time either.

Hey Yall..they Are Going To Leave The AsphalT Down..they Are Gonna Raise The Walls And Have AbouT 2 Feet Of Clay On Top Of The AsphalT...pitts Are Gonna Stay Paved...and I Think The Are Gonna Widen The Turns By Bringing The Inside Walls In........

The asphalt could be a good thing, there was a water vein in the ground in turn 1 when I raced there, the track was alway's ruff getting into that corner because of it, the pavement will keep that water down and will keep the water that's applied from going too deep to come back up after the sun goes down.

If I were the owner, I would want the asphalt to stay down. If he ever goes to sell, that's another selling point for him; a buyer would have an option of surfaces already built in.

I think the track should build the track as wide as it needs to be for good side by side racing. If that means only open trailers in the infield pits so be it.Cherokee only has smaller trailers in it infield and you can see great from the stands.
