Elkin, NC ~ The asphalt laying around the four tenths mile oval of Friendship Motor Speedway will soon be be ripped up and replaced with red clay and the track will be reopened in 2008 as a dirt track once again.
Sources close to the Friendship Motor Speedway staff have confirmed that Friendship Motor Speedway will once again be operated as a dirt track. The tracks history is filled with competitive dirt racing since the facility was built back in 1982 and ran almost non-stop as a dirt track from 1982 to 2002. Then in 2003 Checkered Flag Promotions, a collective effort between Danny Baker, Thomas Needham and Randy Myers purchased the speedway and converted the semi successful dirt track to a paved facility.
The track has operated since April of 2003 as a paved track, most recently an ASA Member track, but is now going to see red clay dirt thrown over top of the asphalt as the track readies to return as a dirt track this season. Sources have linked former Late Model Dirt Track star, Phil Hall will operate the facility in 2008 as they transition to a dirt facility once again.
An announcement on the ASA Modified website(www.southernmodtour.net (http://www.southernmodtour.net/)) has sent rumors flying about the future of the series and the 4/10 mile track. The announcement on the ASA Modified series website states that Randy Myers and the ASA Modifieds are no longer associated with the Friendship Motor Speedway, the series "home track" and will not be scheduling any races there this season. The Friendship Motor Speedway website(www.friendshipmotorspeedway.com (http://www.friendshipmotorspeedway.com/)) has also been temporarily shut down while "construction" to the site is being done. The official announcement about the track returning to dirt is expected in the coming days when the website is back up and running.
We hope to have more on the Friendship Motor Speedway in the coming days.

Well, if this is true, Phil Hall knows better than to put clay over asphalt.
If he doesn't, then someone else needs to be running the place. Clay
over asphalt was one of the major problems at Wayne County Speedway
before its demise.

I hope we don't have a dirt hater here. Friendship was a great dirt
track and a great asphalt track, but since dirt is a way better racing
surface than asphalt., It trumps it hands down. It makes the driver work
twice as hard and the crew half as much, besides its more fun, cost less
to run, and pays alot more, A track in florida has done this to get cars back on
the track and fans in the stands. I guess thats whats going on over there, I hope
it works out. Looking forward to putting laps in at that track once again. It can
work if done properly, Good Luck to Phil and Friendship on this venture.
We might even get to see Billy come out of retirement.....

Not a dirt hater here. I just LOVE local racing on short tracks. Dirt or asphalt it is all good to me.

Great news, I heard friendship had some of the best racing around in its day, but i never got the chance to go when it was dirt. Any ideas of when the season will start or whether it will still be a Friday night track or change to Saturday?

he was trying to say rip up the asphalt Wayne county didn't do it and the track was weird Lil it would be a dust bowl but u could walk across the track after the race and leave ure finger prints in the clay and it was still tacky

Ok now i'm just wondering, why did everyone jump to the conclusion anyway that there will just be clay thrown over the asphalt. The first line of the story says the asphalt will be ripped up, and yes, later it says dirt is gonna be thrown over the asphalt. Seems like everyone on here ignored the first line of the news report though. Also gotta remember yall, this is a news report, reporters like to word things so they sound "fancy", for example "red clay thrown over top" sounds better than "replaced with clay." I'm gonna guess Phil Hall knows how to operate a race track, so I think we need to just wait and see if this is even true before we complain about track conditions at a track thats not even open yet.

Never been there, but from my point of view, I'd like another dirt track around. Besides, last time I checked, their website had a dirt car on it!

Looks like to me it's the reporter who made it confusing, contradicting themselves. :confuzeld:
I do agree we should wait and see what happens in the near future when a official release is released form the track. Nothing wrong with talking about it though.:01Happy:
