The Neuse River flows through the dry bed of Falls Lake at the Durham and Granville county lines. Raleigh, which depends on Falls Lake for its water supply, has ordered mandatory water restrictions.
The Raleigh City Council on Tuesday enacted mandatory water conservation rules because Falls Lake, the city's drinking water supply, is 7 feet below normal.
The city of Durham, which gets water from Lake Michie and the Little River Reservoir, could impose such limits next week.
Raleigh's restrictions went into effect at midnight. The restrictions limit when residents can irrigate their lawns; they ban the washing of sidewalks, patios, decks, driveways and parking lots; and they allow vehicles to be washed only at professional car washes, among other prohibitions. Violators can be fined up to $500.
Raleigh's decision to impose mandatory limits reaches across Wake County because communities that receive or purchase water from Raleigh must follow its restrictions: Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Knightdale, Wendell and Zebulon.
