SUMTER, S. C. - The annual Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot-out is rapidly taking shape at the 3/8-mile Sumter Speedway dirt oval and the afternoon program will blast off at 2 p. m. on Saturday, November 26.

This racing card always attracts a huge number of cars from the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida and the $22,755 being offered in prize money is expected to attract many of the top drivers in the south for what is normally the last race of the season in these parts.

A purse of $14,400 is being paid in the popular Super Late Model class, which attracted 41 cars last year. Last year, the program had to be re-scheduled for Sunday, which meant that some of the drivers were unable to return, but 36 drivers were on hand on Sunday to vie for the 24 starting positions. Some of the drivers who were on hand on Saturday but were not on hand Sunday were Petey Ivey, Doug Sanders and Clint Elkins.

Bodine Massengill of Yulee, Fla. was the fastest qualifier and started the 50-lap event beside hometown favorite Terry Caples, and led the initial couple of laps, but Caples grabbed the top position and held on to pick up the $4,000 first place money. Massengill held off Jeff Smith of Dallas, N. C. to pick up second place money. The "Georgia Gambler" Ed Basey was fourth.

These drivers are expected to be joined by other local drivers, two-time track champion Daren Griffin and 2004 track champion Joey Griffin.

In addition to the Super Late Models, competition will be held in the Late Model T&L, Super Stock 4, Pro Stock, Mini Stock 4, Pure Stock and Pure Street classes. At 1:30 p. m. the kids will compete in a Hot Wheels event and the days program will end with a demolition derby.

Track champion Buddy Truett will lead the Late Model T&L competition while Banjo Duke will headline the Super Stock 4 battle. Joey Ayers is the leader of the Pro Stock clan, but can expect plenty of competition from James Stephens and Johnny Welch. James Yost and William Disher are the top contenders in the Pure Stock division while track champion Tony Rabon can expect plenty of competition from Cody McAllister and David Hodge. The Pure Street battle is a toss-up between Pete McKenzie, Adam Hill, Marty Horne and Matt Holland.

All of the 2005 track champions will be honored before the start of racing action. Trophies, cash awards and jackets will be presented to Mark Horne, Mark Bartlette, Matt Holland, Tony Rabon, James Yost, Joey Ayers, Banjo Duke and Buddy Truett.

There have been rumors that the ancient dirt oval would not open for its 50th season in 2006, but according to track owner, Charles Hodge, this is a rumor only. "We will open for our 50th season next April and fans and drivers can count on it," Hodge concluded.
