It's been 3 months now since we released our News area. We have since added better navigation to the area and broke it out into sections to make it easier to navigate.

What are your thoughts on it so far, or what would you like changed?

Do you like the old way better, where there were several different forums?

Would you like to see it like the old layout was but on it's own page? This is a sample only. http://www.localracechat.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=239

I have had a few people tell me they don't like the fact that the new system does not show what is posted unless you actually go there. So I have been thinking of another way to handle this without having 50 forums on one page. So with the layout above it's still integrated into the forums but on it's own page. When you click New posts the most recent news will show up like the old way.

Personally I like the posts showing up in the new post area.....I personally tend not to check them because I forget about it being that they do not show up in the new post but that may just be me.

I can live with it either way......

I can live with either, or. I personally like the option of reading all New posts with one single click. I also like things to be organized, in the appropriate forum.

I agree with RC, it took a while to get use too. The old and new are good in my opinion. I also would like to see whatever news that is posted that it goes to the unread posts to read when you log in.

The developer can't give me a time frame when or even if the news area will support the unread posts option.

Is there any option to completely ignore the news forums? I'm overwhelmed now with "new posts" that are news articles and not member posts. I guess some read the news, but it seems to detract from the true meaning of LRC if the news articles outnumber member posts.

Just curious. Thanks for your efforts in trying to find good middle ground here.

But the true meaning here is to deliver the news.. Right? Every forum out there is like this click get new posts and everything is delivered.

Im looking at an option to ignore certain forums from the get new, that will be user selectable.

Is this is a news outlet site or a community discussion site? I certainly hope and think it's the latter. IMO, what makes this site is the discussion provided by its members, not press releases provided to news outlets by race teams, sanctions, etc.

It's both.. We receive just about as much news as any other (News Outlet) as well. Without news you have nothing to discuss sometimes. We have been posting news on this site since day1 so this should not be a surprise just like any other racing forum out there including the largest 4m.

The news section is great. No need for anyone to want to live just in their small section of the world. The more info the better. But I don't like the new layout, havent since it was changed. But I'd rather have it the way it is than not at all.

What is it that you don't like JH?

It doesnt show up in my unread posts and when you go read them it doesnt show the peoples replies all on the same page like this thread, unless its changed. I dont read it all that often since the change. Maybe it does and I havent noticed it.

There's no surprise. I'm simply saying the signal-to-noise ratio seems to be way off. I rarely see much if any discussion driven by the news postings.

Anyway, the question was asked about the news section, so I gave my feedback. To me, news articles and discussion threads / chats are completely different beasts, that's why I prefer to keep them separate. If they keep showing up in "new posts" searches, it's easy enough to work around it by simply browsing the few track forums that I visit. No biggie either way, just offering feedback.

Thanks

That's the whole idea of integrating back in to forums. To see if it does, like it use to. The other news section there was no way to tell there was news posted unless you physically go there and look. Most users of sites like these are just use to clicking the New Posts or like the members do click unread posts.

Oh ok You are talking about the other way not the one now, because the NEW one that we just started, does show up when you click Unread or New Posts and all posts are in a threaded type format just like the forums.

I am with you JH I did not like the way, it would not show the new. News that was posted since my last visit.

I simply go down the page and pick off what I want to read and when I m finished just click mark all forums read..

That's what I was missing- marking all forums as read. Thanks

I think if they show up in your unread posts and all the replies showed up on a format like this one. You would see some dicussion about some of the news topics. Not all of them. In the orginal format RB there was some discussion about some of the news posts. Kinda gave you the chance to debate (argue with members from all over the country. Now for the most part it seems everything is a single debate about a indivaul track and subject is fine. But for someone like myself who keep up with what goes on in the sport all over the country, its nice to talk with others about those subjects other than just what happen at Clarys or CLR or the other NC tracks.

I like the way it shows up in my unread posts. I can pick and choose what I want to read, then as you said Dwayne, click mark all posts read. For example, I am not a big spring car fan, so I can skip those and go to the SLM new related posts in a quick fashion.

The news section right now for me is great. It shows wat has been posted in news in the unread posts, thats basically wat i had wanted changed. Thanks RJ.
