View Full Version : Steel Block Late Model Touring Series

The promotion company that put on the Xtreme 100 steel block race in Virginia is thinking of starting a steel block series.
The following is part of what was said.

What do you guys think about such a series?
I am in the process of working on it right now. I would like to get other peoples thoughts.
Here is the basic format:
It would be a sanctioned series for steel block late models. The rules would be similar to the Xtreme 100 rules. We want to allow everyone that wants to run the chance without changing a bunch of things.
There would be a point system in place, with a championship final money race at the end. The points would also pay the top 10, with the top 8 locked into the final race.
This is intended to be a regional type series with limited travel.
If we can get at least 4 tracks on board for next year this might be a go. We are talking to a few now.

There will be a points structure in place, paying approx. 10K purse the first year. In addition to that each race pays $2K to win, which is far better than any local track's purse. The "championship" race at the end of the season would be a $25K purse with $7500 to win.
The rules would be structured as to the engine combos. I feel that we had a wide area of engine combos with the Xtreme 100, and made them very competitive with each other. This would allow the $10k engine packages to be just as competitive with the $20K+ engines.
With the first season running 8 races maximum, the track's cooperation in scheduling their points races, would allow the possibility of a track and series champion.
If this series is possible, we already have at least 12 strong competitors committed to the format, and we don't have a schedule yet!

Let me know your thoughts!

sounds good where will the heart of the touring series be centered? I'll do some checking...

Sounds like something CLR could get involved in because the rules sound pretty similar and the regulars could probably race with the "tour".

They are hoping to iron out all the details by the end of the year.

What are the difference in rules say from WoO or Lucas, MAC, Carolina Clash. none we run all 4 series and do not change anything at all but tires. Then what about the new Caroline Clash Crate series thats starting up this season plus, Fasttak, Stormpay and C.A.R.S. all crate series and all in the southeast. One thing you got to understand crate 602's are all steel, crate 604 has the aluminum heads, also you only have some many racers to go around period. Plus you will probably have to run a mid week show, because there are racers that want to run their home tracks for the points. Are you going to have a tire rule or is it open. Open tire rule is one of the most expensive deals in racing. The big money teams will have 30/40 tires mounted in the trailer. What about a shock rule. Are you going to let hydraulic adjustable shocks be legal or are you just going to race a nonadjustable steel shock. Good hydraulic adjustable shocks racing shocks are very expensive. It might look good on paper, but I just can't see how it will ever fly. Basically there are more series now then there are racers. Stop and think, when a series race comes to a track that if was not for the local cars that show up, there would not be 20 cars in the race.

From Chris Hammer at New Age Promotions from VA dirt lovers board:

Racer, thanks for the questions. All I can say publicly right now is this series is heading in the right direction. As far as flying or not, the wings are just about out.
The differences in the series' that are out there is this; 98% of those series are for super lates, or crates only. Where does that leave the weekly guy that can't afford to move up, but want the experiences that you get from different tracks?
This is a limited series (about 12 races max) that depends on the cooperation of the base tracks. We do not want to take away from home track points for those that still want to do that. Meetings so far have gone better than expected and the support is there. All that needs to happen is the details worked out, and the schedules. My goal is to have this wrapped up by Christmas (no pun intended). Anyone that would like to help or would like more information can contact me at (540) 649-4112.
Thanks to Everyone!

Sorry I forgot to add this. This came from the Va Dirt Lovers Forum:

The S.M.A.R.T series website is now up for general information.
Schedules will be posted after the first of the year, and more information will be posted as soon as possible.
Once the schedule is set and posted we will schedule a drivers meeting for any and all that want to be involved. This will be a chance to bring everyone up to speed and hear concerns and comments.
Hope everyone has a great Christmas, and a Dirt Slingin' New Year!

Randy McCoy started the "Southeastern Latemodel Sportsman Series" last season. It is an all Steel Engine Series. Plans for the "2008" Season will carry the Series to (N.C. / S.C. / GA. / and Tenn.

That may be true. But we already have a steel block motor and don't have money to buy a new crate motor right now. Besides....Don't fix what ain't broke!

I can't wait until they get a schedule out. I'm curious to see how many NC tracks will end up on it. I know there are talks going on with several but nothing on paper yet. Should be an interesting series. I know Chris is working his behind off and Al Martin should be a good addition to their team.

Hey Everybody! First off thanks to LRC for adding us to the forums!
I just got back home from meetings in North Carolina. You guys are the first to know that County Line is our newest addition to the S.M.A.R.T family! We will be running there June 14th. Tentative purse looks like around $1500 to win at least $150 to start. We'll have more on that when we get it worked out. Thanks to James and County Line!
I should have word on Clary's by next week. Marcia is working hard on things and has a plate full herself.
Another big anouncement should be coming in a week or so. All I can say is the track is AMAZING, and too good to just be setting there!
:blue18:
I will be heading to Atlantic City this weekend to promote my tail off. Hopefully we will have more news when I get back!
Thanks Kevin Fisher! The picture turned out nice for the brochures!

Additional info from vadirtlovers:

As for Eastside, as of right now they are on the schedule for July 3rd. That will be a big night for S.M.A.R.T and Eastside.
Natural Bridge is still awaiting a decision from the county supervisors on their request for changes. Larry cannot make any decisions on scheduling until then. He also wanted everyone to know that he is asking for the ability to run on Friday nights, but DOES NOT mean he is going to switch to friday nights.
We have interest now from Bedford as well as Wytheville. Talks are ongoing with them but not definite yet!
