A former NFL running back pleaded guilty to charges of sexual battery Wednesday, according to the Pitt County Sheriff's Office.
David Lee Meggett, 41, was arrested by deputies in August 2006 and charged with second-degree rape.
Judge Thomas D. Haigwood heard the plea and sentenced him to probation and community service, said Lee Moore, chief of investigations. The duration of that sentence has not yet been verified.
Deputies said last year that Meggett entered the home of his ex-girlfriend, located a few miles from the Edgecombe County line in Belvoir, and raped her early on Aug. 31, 2006.
The now 28-year-old woman claimed the relationship ended long before the incident occurred.
The former Pro Bowler, who played with the New York Jets, New England Patriots and the New York Giants, was working as the director of Robersonville Parks and Recreation at the time of his arrest.
Meggett is originally from Charleston, S.C., and Moore said he is expected to serve his sentence in that state
