View Full Version : Late game free throws help Virginia Tech edge Elon 69-64

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Jeff Allen had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Virginia Tech held of a late second-half rally for a 69-64 win over Elon on Friday night the season opener for both teams.

The Hokies (1-0) led by as many as 14 midway through the second half and had their lead cut to 65-64 with 12 seconds left on a pair of 3-pointers by Elon's Montell Watson.

But A.D. Vassallo and Allen each scored a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds to hold off the Phoenix (0-1).

Vassallo added 17 points and Deron Washington had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Virginia Tech, which made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.

Watson led Elon with 18 points, Chris Long added 11 and Ola Atoyebi had 10.

Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg is 5-0 in both season and home openers.
