View Full Version : WOW late models shafted by the sprints

I am glad that the dirt late models where on national tv but i feel that they got the shaft in a way because it was more all about the sprints than an even show between the lates an the sprints. Don't get me wrong i thought it was a good show just wish i would have seen more of the late models is all.

Not sure if anyone else caught it, but Chris, Adrian and I did. After the Sprint car feature, before signing off, Dave Despain said "I want to congratulate last nights Winner, Scott Bloomquist and tonights Sprint car winner, Steve Kinser." He never even said anything about Donnie Moran winning the SLM feature Saturday night.

i thought they should have shown more of the late model heats as well they showed all of the sprint heats but just barely highlites of heats for lates and that sucked but despain doesnt really like bloomer either but they should have showed more of the action instaed of watching the leader all the time but thats the prob with tv they only wanna show what they want not really all the action

did u hear the question that despain asked bloomer about driving in nascar? Bloomer gave the correct statement to that question. Dirt racing is where its at.

The coverage should have made anyone within 500 miles of Lowes very upset.

That they were not there!

The pits were awesome, all the drivers were outside, trying to act cool but you could tell everytime someone with a Speed jacket walked by they sat up. How many times in the past have you seen Weeks or Jeff Smith on TV? Of couse TV missed the good stuff, the heat races were off the charts. The B features going for the last 2 spots ....

But for the people who were there you can bet they will be replaying the broadcast with a smile.

im glad that we as dirt tracks are getting recognized. now we cant just sit there and expect this one telecast to make dirt racing go off the chart. sure it was great to see it, but we got to do more now. anyway, the coverage of the sprints was more in depth than the late models. would have been nice to see some local boys on there. anyway. SPEED started it so lets take it even farther

I was there. I saw the replay Saturday night when I got home and it sucked. Yeah some coverage is better than none but that TV show Saturday night sucked.

Thanks to Roger Slack for trying to insure his track conditions were right for the so called live TV, he tore up a lot of equipment.

I couldn't figure out for the longest time what the hell he was trying to accomplish with those yellow barriers. In case you didn't notice on TV or seen it yet/ He had them, place these square yellow barriers from the entrance of turn one all the way through turn two and the same with turns 3 an 4. They were about 10-15ft up on the track. I thought it was so no one would run the bottom. He even walked out on the track and pointed like a ass at one of the LM's that had hit one. The two Sprints that flipped were because one of them hit a barrier that had already been hit and knocked about 20ft onto the track. It was a joke watching the drivers having to dodge the barriers going through the turns. To me the heats were not that good, almost leaning towards they sucked.

Well right before the late model feature, he brings the tractor out with the disc and cuts the bottom groove about 15ft from the bottom. Well the whole night Iam sure Newbe was tired of hearing me yelling and cussing Slack out LOL. Well I thought he was hell bent and determined nobody was gonna run the bottom cause he tore up the bottom and was gonna just leave it that way. Well then Shane Clanton went down on the track and checked out the bottom, so dude in a Lowe's jacket came over there and ran him back up off the track. Well then he took and had the water truck come and spray the turns I said day um he is gonna take the bottom all the way out of action. Well then as the packer cars moved down to roll it in the light bulb went off I screamed you SOB you have tore up all this equipment, caused wrecks and ruined my show cause you had to manipulate the event with the track prep to help ensure you had a surface to race on. Now I think the LM feature was good. But was it really worth all the hell it put all those drivers and fans through?????

I cant be the only one who saw this or feels this way about it am I????????

John, I can assure you that you are not the only one who feels this way, the only thing I am thankful for is that they used the yellow barriers instead fo the usual tractor tires......I had fun because I was at a dirt track with good friends, but it was in no way the show I had hoped to see........

For what it's worth, I'm sure Roger had a very good reason to do what he did with the bottom of the track. Agree or disagree, he didn't do that for the heck of it. One thing is certain: the track was in much better condition Saturday night than it was Friday night. If I had to guess, he was forcing the cars from digging in to one grove at the bottom of the track early in the night which would have caused poor racing conditions later for the features.

What was wrong with the track Friday?????? If you ask me and stright from Scott Bloomquist mouth it was the best Lowes has ever been.

"What a great race and a great race track," Bloomquist said. "When we first took off there, the car was a little bit off. I went in and had them do some adjustments real quick, so we had to come from dead last. I think the track came around and the tires came in, just everything worked good. I definitely don't need to touch the race car for tomorrow because that baby was sweet."

You have got to be kidding me. If you think the track was in better condition Friday night than it was Saturday, I'm going to start calling YOU the newb. Good lord man. The "hot laps" Friday were more like "cold slides" and the upper half of the track was almost completely separated from the bottom. There were a lot more accidents caused by the track on Friday night than there were Saturday night.

Yes it did. Turns 1-2 were in worse shape than 3-4, which mirrored what I saw at the Jani-King a few weeks back. They did a much better job with the track on Saturday. The track was much better on Thursday and Saturday...

Back on topic. The WoO started with the Sprints back in 1978. They didn't add the Late Models until 2004. I think the TV coverage reflected this. Heck, the scheduling of the overall event reflected this. The Sprints closed out the event with their feature on Saturday night.

Opps cant really use them as an example to make my point cause they didn't do much dayum passing all weekend!!!!!

I know every race fan has their own taste. But we are not talking about asphalt VS Dirt. As a dirt fan anyone would have to admit that the Supers were the show and the Sprints at best were time fillers!!!!!! First race in a long time I haven't almost pee'd my pants cause I didn't want to get up and miss any action. Well not this weekend had plenty of down time to visit the concessions and the bathroom!!!!!!:DontKnow::19mauer:

Those numbers are in no way indicative of the overall "passing" that took place on the track. Also, I've seen just as many boring late model races this year that would have easily compared to your description of the Sprints this past weekend.

If you grew up watching Sprints, you'd probably be saying the same thing about the late models right now.

In any case, all of this is OFF TOPIC.

Its on topic. Its all examples of why the LM"s got do doed on. Doesn't matter what you grew up on. I never saw the sprints go 3 and yes sometimes 4 wide like the Late Models did both nights. Also they had to put the little girly cone at the Flag stand cause they couldn't trust em to get off of 4 and down the front straight into turn 1 without tearing their stuff all up. If all the LM action was shown live on TV the phones at speed would be blowing up today wanting to know what took em so long to show this stuff live and when are they gonna do it again.

As it is I think the only one's who are even talking about all this today are the same ole Dirt fans who would have been talking about it anyway. I dont see how this weekend's TV coverage did anything to bring new fans and new positive attention to Dirt racing and yes I blame speed for some of that.

Well aren't you just a negative Nancy tonight?

I think the coverage was very positive to dirt racing overall as is all of the WoO coverage on Speed.

And debating the conditions of the track and girly cones and side by side racing is off topic. If you can't see the reasoning behind the decision to give more attention to the Sprint cars, you're simply ignoring important facts- primarily the one that I stated earlier. Up until 2004, the "World of Outlaws" was Sprint racing and had been that way for close to 25 years. Most of the WoO coverage on Speed all year has been Sprint events.

In any case, I don't see the usefulness in raising hell with Speed about the coverage. What is there to compare it to? Would everyone be happier if they didn't show it at all? I just don't get it, but then again, I'm usually a "cup is half full" type.

It dont matter what is done. Nobody is EVER going to be happy until they open their own track and do it like they want to.. I was just glad I got to see it. I can truely say that it dosent matter to me what is racing as long as it is something. Sorry some of you didnt enjoy it, maybe next time.

Didnt say I didnt enjoy it. I had a blast. Watching Bloomer charge through the field and hoping Ricky would hold him off and he would have if not for a certin car was worth the whole weekend. Saturdays race was pretty good also.

Was just hoping this would put the LM's on the map, who knows but maybe it did.

Little quick personal story and then I will be done. My Granddad is 95 years old and untill I started annoucning at Clary's he could care less about racing. He still cant make it out to the track because of his health, but he asks me every Sunday, did yall have a good crowd? Lot of cars? Just general stuff and then he always asks about the cars, what kind and how fast. I tell him they run on Dirt, he always says I never seen a race on dirt. So I told him all week and even called from the track to remind him about saturday night being on TV and you can watch a dirt race on TV.

So when I saw him sunday, first thing he wanted to talk about was the race on TV Saturday night. With out any proding or anything right outa the blue he says " I didnt like those little cars, I kinda like them big cars" What kind do yall race out there?" I said the Big cars, he said "oh good cause I dont know how you could watch those others every week.

I rest my case, if a 95 year old man who has never seen or cared about a dirt race can figure it out, then why cant the rest of the world??????????????:14NotWorthy:

I know the World of Outlaws was full sprint cars for years, i just would have liked to see Speed be able to have had enough time to give both sprints and late models at least close to the same coverage. I also know that Speed has times that they have to go by was just i bit disappointed is all i was saying..

Speed has given them both fair coverage all year long the final was just more on sprints.Me my self i would watch a sprint race just like a late model race. Both good racin and both on DIRT that whats matter.
