Yes, I'm beating that horse again.

When I see (and I mean *really see* in photographs) tracks up north running races during the afternoon at this time of year, and fans are in the stands wearing t-shirts to indicate that it's still reasonably warm out, I can't help not to think that we should be doing the same thing in this area.

Look at that! A winner's photo and it's still daylight outside? Fans in the stands wearing t-shirts! Street Stocks crashing into each other on the track!

I wish someone would do this Oct - Nov here in NC.

Oh- and that Travis guy takes a mean photo. :wow_NBS:

my car is still ready to go.

forget get it though. racing here will never be like it is up north. it sucks. racing originated in the south but yet the guys up north are way more passionate about it. and before anyone tries to say it cost money to do that. yea i know. but what is the racer's excuse? late models up there can run for $1500 and get 40+ show up.$1500 here and you almost have 5-10. its pathetic. we need to step up and do it down here but i dont see it happening.

Not saying they do BUT maybe the tracks work together. Same rules that kinda stuff. I know its like that in the midwest also. But like you were saying, back in the day people would race Fri and Sat nite and then on Sun afternoon. Maybe the dirt has changed.

:icon_agreed: Now is the time that track owners and promoters should be working TOGETHER. Heck, steal the rules from one of the national sanctioning bodies.

no need to steal any rule just put clr-clarys-dublin-fme rule into 1...if you run at these tracks you can run at any track of the 4 listed and be legal..it not much difference in the rules in most classes:topicsign:

I have the rules for 5 different series, all you have to do is go to a series race and ask for them. But rb you want to know something that is simpler then that going to a track, Most all series post there rules on their site so all you have to do is down load them and make up your own from there. :BustinAss:

In KY, MO IL, and IN most of the tracks run UMP rules. That's for SLM, Mods, and Streets. The crates are broken up between two sanctioning bodies. Most nights at any track there will be 18-35 SLM, 20 Crates, 18-35 mods, and 20-30 streets. (Some tracks run IMCA for Mods; which prohibit the alum blocks). The minis are unsanctioned. There are usually 120+ in the pits on any given night, and the racing is extremely competative. In most classes there are 6-10 folks that can and will win on any given night. They start racing in March and will go in to Oct/Nov if the weather permits.

Even after the points race is over, the driver's and fans show up every time the track is open.

But they (mostly) run on 1/4, 1/3, and 3/8 mile tracks. Not 4/10 and 1/2 mile tracks. The racing is more side-by-side and a LOT more exciting. Heck they even run SLM on 1/5 mile tracks. Now THAT is a bull ring race! And they will get 3three-wide. It's something to see.

Is UMP or IMCA the answer for this area?

Daytime dirt racing? I've never met a daytime dirt track race that I didn't think would have been better at night.

forget get it though. racing here will never be like it is up north. it sucks. racing originated in the south but yet the guys up north are way more passionate about it.

I'm not an expert, not even close ... even forget my own name sometimes (so feel free to rip apart everything I say). I thought auto racing started in Europe in the late 1800s and in the states it started near the turn of the century with midget cars on the board tracks of the northeast and midwest. I think stock car racing may have started in the south.

And cold, how about upstate NY (Ransomeville) and their annual Hangover 100 (now 150) on Jan1. Have never gone to it, afraid of my pee freezin' - northern Jersey coast, weekend after Thanksgiving (Wall Speedway Turkey Derby) is cold enough for me!

rb
10-28-2007, 08:25 AM
Right, the notion that racing started in the South is completely untrue. Stock cars maybe, but not racing. I've read that the racers up north didn't want to have much to do with the first stock car racers in the south.

It actually began before World War I. During the 1920’s and 30’s it started to quickly become more widespread throughout the United States. The roots of dirt track racing in North Carolina go back even further than asphalt stock car racing.

The first auto race in the United States took place in Evanston, Illinois on November 28, 1895 over a 87.48-km (54.36 mile) course, with Frank Duryea winning in 10 hours and 23 minutes, beating three petrol-fueled and two electric cars.[1] The first trophy awarded was the Vanderbilt Cup.

Why is that?

KevinF

I sure was but wasn't that you taking the pictures with the tripod and the sulfur try.

I'll tell ya, it was tough back then - having to turn that thing after each shot sure got my arms to aching. Just a good thing that morphine was easy to get (ahh, the good old days). But that big, black cover really did help with the dust.

Why is that? "Daytime dirt racing? I've never met a daytime dirt track race that I didn't think would have been better at night."

Basically because tracks usually dry out a lot more during the day, so you get a lot of dust and hard/slick surfaces (IMHO, hard/slick may be good for somethings, but not racing).

That's what I'm thinking!!!! By the way, the're racing in the daytime up at Delaware International this weekend. 10 divisions over two days. Come on up and eat some Delaware dust. Good for the digestion!!!

For the record, I went to my first "day race" yesterday at Cherokee Speedway. The event started at 2 and the supers were done by 7. Technically, the supers race was under the lights, but the point is that they started the event (hot laps) at 2pm. Everything was fine. I was standing directly next to the track the entire day and I left with no more dust than I usually accumulate during a night race.

I've heard NO ONE complain about the event and most are saying what a good race it was- one hundred laps at that.

Right. But Dublin is starting at 5. They could start at 1-2 and there'd be no difference. Sumter is starting at 1.

I just want some freakin' racin' around this time of year without having to drive all over the damned place. I guess I'll have to move further north or west. Sad. So sad.

Move west and the late models suck. Move north and you only have a couple of months window to get races in. Now yes they race 7 nights a week, but not even that is enough to make me want to move above the line. :rules:

But really if you pharse your question or opinion to say daytime racing from the middle of Oct to the end of Nov I can go along with that, but anything differant and I could never agree with that:check_flag2:

They must have done a really good job in preparing the track for the daytime race at Cherokee. True that you get less dust with the lower temperatures but last year I went to Cherokee in early March and Thunder Valley in early November, both were daytime races and both were dust bowls. So I guess hats off to the people at Cherokee for preparing such a good daytime surface.
