POWELL WINS 1ST IN FASTRAK NORTHEAST LATE MODEL SERIES DEBUT AT DOG HOLLOW

August 31, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Strongstown PA…After a near two-month hiatus due to several rainouts and cancellations, the FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series made their maiden voyage to Jim and Sharon Michny’s Dog Hollow Speedway on Friday night with 21 cars taking part in action on a beautiful night at the fast 4/10-mile oval.
Bobby Powell has been a proven winner with the Stock Cars and E-Mods throughout his career in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Earlier this month, car owner Scott Bidwell made the decision to leave the E-Mod ranks to join the growing FASTRAK Late Model Models. In his third night, Powell made Bidwell a Late Model winner in weekly action at Raceway 7. On Friday night, making just his sixth career Late Model start and first in Touring Series competition, Powell drove an impressive race holding off one of the region’s best in Alan Dellinger to capture the 25-lap victory worth $1,200.
“This has always been a dream of Scott’s to own a Late Model,” acknowledged the Waterford, Pa. driver in victory lane. “We have four of the hardest working kids around so as long as I don’t screw up we’ll be alright. It’s been nine years since I’ve been here and I couldn’t remember how to get here. This is a nice track. We’d love to come back as long as you have us. I like the yellow on my car, but I didn’t like all those yellow flags with the veterans beside and behind me.”
Powell took the lead at the onset past pole-sitter Rodney Phillips, while fourth starter Greg Oakes raced past Carl McKinney and Phillips into second on the opening lap. Dellinger, who started seventh, found the outside to his liking as he made his way into contention on lap four taking third from Phillips, while John Watson followed into fifth one lap later.
By lap six, Powell opened up a straightaway lead, while Dellinger began to close in on Oakes for second. Dog Hollow regular, Kirby Tucker, who was making his Touring Series debut spun to bring out the first caution with seven laps completed. Oakes clipped a yuke tire causing front-end damage and he exited the event yielding second to Dellinger with Watson to third.
When racing resumed, Dellinger pressured Powell the remainder of the race. The two ran side-by-side on laps eight and nine then again on lap 14 with Powell running the bottom and Dellinger the top. Cautions slowed action, but every time Powell was able to maintain the lead. Tom Snyder, Jr., who has two Dog Hollow weekly-sanctioned victories, started 20th and made his way to the front taking fourth from Dick Barton on lap 16 and then third from Watson using the inside on lap 18.
Dellinger made another bid for the lead on lap 19 as he raced side-by-side with Powell, but couldn’t make the pass stick. Snyder joined the battle on lap 20 making it a three-car race for the lead with Watson and Barton not far behind in fourth and fifth. J.R. Wright spun for the second time bringing out the event’s final caution with 24 laps completed and set up a one-lap shootout.
When racing resumed, Powell got a good restart and didn’t allow Dellinger to get alongside of him in turns one and two. Snyder tried a slide job on Dellinger in turn one, but came up empty-handed as he slid up out of the groove allowing Watson to get back by for third. Powell went on to take the win in the Fame RV Center/Maloney Took & Mold/Saegertown Hardware/Rich Johnson Electric/Vernon Pizzeria-sponsored #B1D. The Bidwell team left Dog Hollow and headed to Virginia’s Wytheville Raceway for Saturday and Sunday’s National FASTRAK event, which will pay the winner a record $10,000!
Dellinger’s runner-up allowed him to extend his point lead in the chase for the $5,000 to-win Northeast Touring Series Championship. Watson’s third place finish broke the tie for runner-up in points with him and Barton. Snyder was fourth over Barton, a three-time Touring Series winner. Carl McKinney turned in his best performance of the season in sixth. Chris Angelicchio, who had only two starts at Dog Hollow, made his first Touring Series start and came home a solid seventh. Chris Knuth, Chad Wilds, and Tom Kemp completed the top 10. Heat winners were Dellinger, Oakes, and Phillips.
The next FASTRAK Northeast Touring Series event will be this Friday night, September 7 at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, Ohio as part of the track’s season ending Fall Classic. The 25-lap feature will pay $1,200 to-win. The final Northeast Touring Series event will be on Friday, September 28 at McKean County Raceway in a $3,000 to-win event.
