Fourteen months after accepting the position of head football coach at Campbell University, Dale Steele will lead a team of 110 players today through its first full practice.

The Fighting Camels will spend the 2007-08 year practicing in preparation for the school's first football game since 1950. Campbell will host Birmingham Southern on Aug. 30, 2008 at the school's on-campus football stadium, which is under construction adjacent to U.S. 421 at the south edge of campus.

This fall, the Fighting Camels will drill Monday through Friday at 2:30 p.m. on a temporary practice facility located at the north edge of campus on Gregory Circle. In addition, the team will conduct several intrasquad scrimmages, one of which has been scheduled for 10 a.m. during Homecoming/Parents' Weekend festivities on Saturday, Oct. 20.

"After a full year of fitting the players, staff, equipment and facilities together, we finally get to take the next step and begin our preparation for next season on the field," said Steele. "It is always exciting this time of year to be practicing football, but it is particularly exciting due to the fact that so many at Campbell have waited so long for this day. Our players and coaches are excited to finally be taking the next step toward Aug. 30, 2008 and Birmingham Southern."

After more than a five-decade absence, Campbell University announced on April 7, 2006 that it will again field a varsity football program in 2008. The Fighting Camels will compete on the NCAA Division I-AA (non-athletic scholarship) level.
