FASTRAK Late Models at WYTHE RACEWAY Saturday; $2,000 to-win Mid-East Touring Series Event is Race #2 of the $20,000 Weekend!
By Mike Leone
May 22, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Carnesville, GA)…The beautiful ½-mile facility of Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Virginia will host the FASTRAK Late Models this Saturday, May 26. After being postponed by rain from the original May 5 scheduled event, the FASTRAK Late Models will return to Wythe Raceway for the first time in 2007 for a Mid-East Touring Series event paying $2,000 to-win, $200 to-start.
This will be the second leg of the $20,000 weekend for the FASTRAK dirt Late Model series. Teams from around the country are expected as many of them are running at the Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Friday night and will then head north to Wythe to complete the weekend. The event will serve as a tune-up as Wythe will host the $10,000 to win “spectacle” on Labor Day weekend this year and many of the teams see this as a great opportunity to get in some seat time of the famed half mile.
$2500 BONUS! Each team that was at the previously held Volunteer Speedway event will be eligible for the bonus providing they come to the Wythe event as well. Each teams’ name will be put in a hat and drawings will be held directly after the main event in the tech building. There will be 24 cash drawings.
High banks, wide racing surface and a track that rarely sees dust period is the “claim-to-fame” of track owner Fred Brown. Brown built the raceway originally and has owned the facility for 38 years and is noted as being the “grand-daddy” of crate racing. He started the class on dirt before anyone in the country. Since joining forces with the FASTRAK Racing Series only three short years ago, the track now has 34 registered FASTRAK drivers with a normal weekly field of 24-26 late models every Saturday night.
John Leyellen current sits atop the FASTRAK points in the Mid-East Region with Phenix City, Alabama native William Thomas holding the second spot and South Carolina’s own, Lee Cooper, holding down the third position. Thomas and Cooper are only separated by one point as they head into this event. Southern Region point leader David “Bad Boy” McCoy will be on hand as he only has a three point lead over Thomas for second place and Georgia native Jordy Nipper currently third.
Brown also runs the FASTRAK open wheel modifieds every week and continues to see that class grow with averaging 17-18 open wheels every Saturday night. The FASTRAK open wheel car utilizes the GM 602 crate engine, which retails in the area of $3000.
The FASTRAK Late Model series has become one of the “fan favorites” across the country as fan involvement is certainly a top priority for them. Fireworks, a four-wide salute to the fans, cash tennis ball toss to the fans in the stands, six-car inversion chosen by six lucky children, an autograph session, and some of the best side by side racing in the country is a FASTRAK specialty. Fans were very gracious at the last appearance of the Series at Wythe in 2006 thanking the Series and its officials as well as the drivers for bringing FASTRAK to Wythe Raceway.
Keep the $10,000 to-win event on Labor Day Weekend in mind. Cars from all over the Nation are expected to be there from as far away as Wisconsin, South Dakota, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New York. West Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Illinois, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina and Ohio. Fans are encouraged to get tickets as soon as possible as it is expected to be a sell-out crowd. Many of the FASTRAK Regions across the country are planning on “taking the weekend off” as the car count is expected to be tremendous. FASTRAK weekly-sanctioned track promoters from across the United States will be on hand as well. There are “negotiations” under way to televise the event “nation-wide” being viewed in October 2007 in a PRIME TIME slot, with two additional air times. Announcements will be forthcoming.
On Saturday, gates open at 3 p.m., tech opens at 4, a drivers meeting will take place at 6:15, with racing at 7. Pit admission $25, grandstands $12.
