Take a Hilarious Ride with Barter Theatre’s Tradin’ Paint
Abingdon, Va.—It’s the bump in the road that makes the trip worthwhile in Catherine Bush’s award-winning comedy, Tradin’ Paint, beginning at Barter Stage II May 18, 2007.
Darla Frye’s (Janeé Reeves) life is on the skids. Between her lack-luster job of stocking car parts and her good-for-nothing boyfriend Coty (Matt Greenbaum), who only loves her for her fried chicken, spending time at the speedway is her only saving grace. After a heavenly visit from Dale Earnhardt, a class with an out-of-place professor (Frank Taylor Green) and a new friendship with a pit crew chief, who’s a woman of all things (Seana Hollingsworth), the caution flag on her life has been lifted.
“Tradin’ paint,” the bumping and banging that goes on in a race and with the people we meet in life, gives way to this entertaining show that takes you on a journey around the track, into the pits, up to heaven with Dale and deep into the world of stock car racing. The 2006 winner of the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights and a story of hope, Tradin’ Paint will be loved equally by racing fanatics and non-fanatics.
Tradin’ Paint is written by Catherine Bush, Barter Theatre’s Playwright-in Residence. Audiences know and love Catherine’s Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights work The Other Side of the Mountain and The Quiltmaker. Her musical comedy spoof, I’ll Never Be Hungry Again, was so popular that people purchased tickets to sit in the aisles. Bush, a recent nominee for the Steinberg playwriting award, has two other shows coming to Barter Stage II this year including Wooden Snowflakes this holiday season and Cry Wolf! presented by The Barter Players this June.
Don’t miss this comedy about racing, romance, discovery and life starring a great cast of Barter professionals including Frank Taylor Green (seen recently in It’s a Wonderful Life, Don’t Hug Me and Long Shadow) as Halley Smoot and Janeé Reeves (from The Quiltmaker and Blithe Spirit) as Darla Frye. Other stars include Seana Hollingsworth, Nicholas Piper, John Hedges and Matt Greenbaum.
Tradin’ Paint is one helluva ride with a lot of “tradin’ paint.” Audiences should note that this play contains strong language. Special thanks goes to Bristol Motor Speedway and Morgan McClure Racing for making this production possible.
Sponsored by Central Coal Company, WABN 1230AM/92.7FM and WKPT-TV, Tradin’ Paint can be seen at Barter Stage II from May 18-August 26, 2007.
