Well, I'm from Richmond so I don't know about that far south. I do know that Virginia Motor Speedway (http://www.vamotorspeedway.com/) (near Saluda, VA) is holding an ASCS 360 sprint race (American Sprint Car Series (http://www.ascsracing.com/)) on May 25 and May 26. It pays $6,000 to win on Saturday and is an ASCS national event as well as paying points in most of their other regions. The first VMS ASCS race this year was not a national event and this one coming up should be much bigger and better. The two premier 360 sprint clubs from the northeast (URC and ESS) also both have those two days off and I'd expect to see a good many of them coming down as well. Although this is just a guess, I wouldn't be surprised to see 60 or 70 cars show up.
The ARDC midgets (ARDC Midgets (http://www.ardcmidgets.com)) also make a "southern swing" every year down to Dixieland and County Line (both in NC). I don't know what the purse is, but its nowhere near $6,000 to win. They also only bring 15-18 cars, mainly because its a long trip down from mainly PA, NJ, and NY. But the racing is absolutely terrific at both places - SmugMug - Kevin Fisher : ARDC Midgets at County Line Raceway - 6/24/06 (http://www.kevinf.smugmug.com/gallery/1619189#78841770) and SmugMug - Kevin Fisher : ARDC Midgets at Dixieland Speedway - 6/23/06 (http://kevinf.smugmug.com/gallery/1632637#79632604). This year they will be at Dixieland on July 13 and County Line on July 14.
Hope this is helpful and that you can find some races like you are talking about.

Open wheel purses range $1200 to $ 3000.00 (special shows). For the most part they race in the mid america area. They are growing here in the east with tracks in PA. NY. OH.
