Former ten-time Late Model Champion, Kenny Pettyjohn was surprised by his crew and fans when they celebrated his 200th career victory and his 103rd at Delaware International Speedway on Saturday night. Pettyjohn captured the 20-lap main after taking the lead from defending champion, Donald Lingo, Jr. just past the halfway mark and then holding on for the win.
Donald Lingo, Jr. got a good run coming off the second turn at the start of the Late Model feature and moved by David Hill to take the lead. Kenny Pettyjohn settled into the second spot with Hill latching on to third. Rick Whaley was running strong in the fourth spot and Bob Geiger held down fifth.
Despite several cautions the order remained unchanged through the first half of the race. Pettyjohn was perfectly positioned when Lingo slid high in the third turn on lap 13 and he shot under Lingo for the lead.
For the remainder of the distance Pettyjohn was able to open a slight lead and Lingo was unable to challenge. Whaley made a bid for second on lap sixteen but could not make the pass. G.G. Messick came from his 12th starting spot to move by Geiger for fifth with one to go.
At the checkered, it was Pettyjohn, in the Steve Nuttle/Mid Coastal Siding/Rocket taking the checkered with Lingo second and Hill third. Whaley finished in the fourth spot and Messick rounded out the top five. Heats were won by Hill and Lingo. In victory lane, Pettyjohn was greeted by his father Eddie, his wife, owner and crew who showered him with champagne in recognition of his 200th career win in the Late Model division.
