View Full Version : Crates race at Carolina March 10(last night)

Just like Jhofficial....I'm not a big fan of crate racing. But last night at Carolina Speedway these guys put on a heck of a show. Good racing through the field. Some lifting the left front tire up coming off the turns. Crate cars actually looked fast last night for a change. #22 Chris Ferguson was on a rail and when he makes the full time jump to Supers he will be a driver to watch out for.
The second heat with the T1 & 16 was good. Side by side for the lead during the first 3 or 4 laps.
21 or 22 cars last night , only 18 or 19 taking the green.

Crates finish 1st,2nd. and 4th in Late Model race at Antioch
Love 'em or Hate 'em, They are the future! I like them for the reason that the ball is put into the drivers and set-up mans lap. You can't be out motored by your competitor so you have to out-drive or out-handle him. Plus the $10,ooo+ you saved on your engine will allow you to travel to a lot of big events which were not a option prior.

There are no SLM's allowed at Anitoch. Crates cant run with slm and never will put on the same xciting show

Comparing Supers to Crates is like comparing Funny Cars to Pro Stocks!
They are 2 different worlds! Yet very exciting in their own way!

I never have compared them. But everywere you read someone else is. Iam not necessirily donwing them, but they dont even compare to a LLM to me. I enjoyed the crates the other weekend at cherokee. But you can bet your last dollar I didnt ride 4 plus hours to see crates never have never will.

Never say never!
I owned a VMS late model last season and won several races. The money it cost to buy and maintain my motor would have paid for 5 602 crate motors. Rule changes to "make things better" was the last straw. I sold my operation. To update my motor would have cost me several thousand dollars above the cost to freshen it.
We went to Lowe's this past fall and I must say that up until then I wasn't a crate fan but that was the best race there! Well now we're putting together a top notch crate operation for less than half the cost and we are going to use the difference to travel to several big events which was impossible to do before.
Crate racing is a skills class. You can't out-motor me so you have to out drive or out handle me. Every weekend you see more and more SLM drivers trying their hand at crate racing. And they aren't dominating!
Don't get me wrong. I think SLM racing is awesome! But so are a lot of other classes!

I understand all of the above from an owners point of view. The cost differance is huge. But dont try selling me on the racing(not saying you, I mean in general) You can tell the differance with the naked eye, dont need no stop watch. The racing (to me) is not the same. I like watching racin when power is a factor, I like seeing guys power past another coming off the corner or pulling someone down the strights. The lack of horse power and the differance in horsepower make more often than not for train races. I'd love to see a pic of a crate coming off a corner with the left front about 3-4 ft off the ground or better yet show me one with both front tires or for that matter (like I have seen slm's) with only the back right tire in contact with the ground. I havent seen one of a crate, it may be out there, but I aint never seen it in person or photo.

Remember that 1 in the air makes for a good picture,
But 4 on the ground is the fastest way around! :icon_beerchug:

I think you will like this:
"The Late Models were loud and extremely fast. It is exhilarating watch big block horsepower carry the left front tire off the corners. Marshal Austin Jr. and Jeff Conyers each won heat races. They sat on the front row for the 40 lap feature. On lap 4 Charlie Brown spun and Austin slid sideways into his stopped car. Marshal's crew quikly changed a tire and had him back in the race for the restart. The other heat winner Conyers had no better luck as he retired his car on lap 5. Sean Smith emerged to lead all but 3 laps on his way to victory. Bill Howard finished second and Roger Clouse third. Marshall Austin Jr. made his way back to fourth. The final top five car was Bobby Clarke."
What they fail to tell you is that Smith's car is a legal crate late model! LOL

Did I ever tell you about the time me and Bloomquist were hot lapping at Eldora. He was ib his Super and I had that old crate motor. We were on the same radio frequency and after about 10 laps of running side by side. He radioed me and ask me if that was all I got? I told him to let me shift it into high gear and we'll find out!

IS THAT A THING OF BEAUTY OR WHAT!
Did you know that any SLM driver that enters into a crate late model race must run with a 6" piece of 2X4 under their gas pedal until they get use to the extra power! Really!!!
