Smithfield PD To Hold Citizens Police Academy - Smithfield Police Chief Steve Gillikin has announced plans for the departments first ever Citizens Police Academy. The thirty-hour, ten week course begins on September 13 and will last for three hours every Tuesday night. Enrollment will be limited to 15 students 21 and older. Basic criminal background checks will be completed. Police academy students will be able to ride with officers, fire an officer’s handgun, and learn more about laws police enforce. Chief Gillikin said the course is designed to give the public a better understanding of the department. Interest applicants can contact the police department at 919-934-2121 for an application. The deadline is this Friday, September 9.
