SUMTER, S. C.
Speedway owner Chales Hodge said that it had been a long season and with the last points race being run last Saturday night, many of the drivers had approached him and asked that he consider calling off the program and give everyone a chance to take off for a long weekend.
"With Monday being Labor Day and many of the cars in need of repair, I think the drivers and their crew members are just tired. The season started 23 weeks ago and it takes a lot of time and money to keep these cars running, so a vacation is needed by everyone, including myself," Hodge said. "I'm going to take a long weekend vacation with my family for the first time in a very long time, and this will give everyone a chance to have their cars in top condition for the 'Turkey Shoot-out' after Tanksgiving."
With the running of the races last week, all division championships have been decided and the top three finishers in each class will be presented trophies and cash awards on November 26.
The "Shoot-out" has become a tradition for drivers and fans from the southeastern part of the country. In addition to the six support classes that run at the 3/8-mile dirt oval every week, a demolition derby is planned along with a power wheel event for the kids. The highlight of the Saturday afternoon affair will be a 50-lap Super Late Model event that will pay the winner $4,000 from a purse that exceeds $14,000. Many of the top drivers in this type of racing were on hand last year, but first place went to hometown competitor Terry Caples. Pit Gates will open at 10 a.m. with the grandstands opening at noon. The first race is scheduled to get underway at 2 p. m.
