Saluda, VA – First time was a charm for Donnie Daniel of West Point, VA as he picked up his career first Victory Lap Late Model victory in his first race of the season in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. Daniel started 15th, took the lead on lap 15 and then motored on to the win by eight car lengths in his #3D Churchview Septic / Direct Wood Products / V.T.I. Pontiac Warrior over Jared Powell of Charlottesville, VA. With the win Daniel becomes the ninth different winner in the division.

“I got lucky those guys got caught up in that early caution and I was far enough back to avoid it, but it sure feels great to get this win,” commented Daniel on his first victory.

Roland Mann set fast time in “Hot lap” Qualifying and inverted the top eight cars putting Joey Love and Stevie Long on the front row leading the field to green. Love won the drag race into turn 1 with Long and Ray Love Jr. battling for second. Long and Love got together out of turn 2 allowing Jared Powell to move to second. Caution fell for Ray love as he slowed coming out of turn 4.

On the restart Joey Love kept Powell at bay but only for one more circuit as Powell took the lead on lap 4 out of turn 2. On lap 5 Matt Morgan took 2nd from Love and went after Powell for the top spot. As Morgan dove under Powell in Turn 3 he lost control of the car spinning and collecting points leader Jamie Lathroum, Roland Mann and Craig Eastep, all three would continue with repairs.

On the restart Joey Love got inside Powell as the two raced off Turn 4 side by side and taking the lead back at the line. On lap 9 Donnie Daniel moved inside Powell to take second and close in on the leader. On lap 15 Daniel got the break he needed as Love bobbled just enough for him to take the lead followed by Powell to second. While Daniel, Powell and Love battled for the lead twenty-fourth starting Pat Wood looked inside Greg Roberson for fifth as the two raced into Turn 1. Lathroum made it three wide for the spot as the trio exited turn 2. Caution fell on the field on lap 16 closing the field up on Daniel. On the restart Lathroum jumped back to the outside to take third from Love, but caution would fall once again this time for Joey Love as he came to rest in Turn 3.

During the caution Lathroum made his second visit to pit road this time for a flat left rear tire, sending the point leader back to the rear of the field. On the restart Daniel began to pull away from Powell with Wood, Roberson and Mark Parks staying in close contact. With the laps winding down and with Daniels in control the show was Lathroum working his way back for the rear a second time. By lap 32 Lathroum had worked his way back into the top five with an outside pass of Roberson. Daniel cruised to a eight car length victory over Powell as Lathroum picked up 4th on the last lap with an outside move on Parks out of turn four.

Following Daniels to the checkers were Jared Powell, 24th starting Pat Wood, Jamie Lathroum and Mark Parks. Daniels also picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with the victory. Pat Wood picked up a $100 bonus in the Morgan Race Engines Challenge for finishing in the top three with a Morgan International Race Engine.

In other action Eric Erwin of Beaverdam, VA regained the lead from Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA on lap 22 and survived a green, white, checkered finish to take home his second win of the season in the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature. Page Harrison finished second and retook the point’s lead over Renee Weeks. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature it only took Walker Arthur of Forest, VA two laps to get to the front and take over the lead and then led the remaining laps to finally return to victory lane for the second time this season. John Imler of Edgewater, MD first battled Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA for the lead before Lipscombe gave up the lead with a spin on lap 19. Then Imler had to hold off a very determined Mark Cunningham of Glen Allen, VA to score his fourth win of the season and in the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature Mark Cunningham of Glen Allen led flag to flag in pretty dominating fashion to capture his second win in a row. Johnny Brooks finished second and with point’s leader John Mosby encountering mechanical issues took over the point lead with one race remaining.
