RAY LOVE JR. SCORES SECOND LATE MODEL WIN AT VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY

SALUDA, VA – Ray Love Jr. of LaPlata, MD has had a rough time closing the deal the past two races in the Victory Lap Late Models at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, being bit both times by mechanical problems while leading the race. This week Love finally had it all goes his way guiding his #08 Love Concrete & Masonry / Summit Financial Corp / Carruth & Son Onc Ready Mix Concrete / D&G Customs Chevrolet Rocket to it’s second victory of the season.

Roland Mann of Chaptico, MD set fast time in “Hot Lap” Qualifying and put Ray Love Jr. and Ronald Cusic on the front row with the pill draw. On the drop of the green Love won the drag race into the first corner to take control of the 35-lap event followed by Cusic, Jamie Lathroum, Joey Love and Mann.

Mann worked his way into fourth on lap 5 with a pass on Joey Love out of turn 2 and then closed on Lathroum. On lap 12 Mann got by Lathroum on the high side out of turn 2 for the third spot but gave the spot back on lap 14 when Lathroum powered back around him on the outside. Mann didn’t give up, taking the third spot from Lathroum on lap 15 and then into second from Cusic on lap 16 with an inside move out of turn 4.

Caution on lap 17 flew as Joey Bonds slowed and came to rest on the backstretch closing the field on the bumper of Love. On the restart Mann stayed with Love and on lap 18 Love got up on the cushion in turn 2 allowing Mann to dive to the inside and take the lead. Love stayed close and on lap 20 Love drove hard into turn 1 and sliding under Mann to retake the lead. With 10 to go Love had stretched his lead to 3-car lengths with Lathroum in striking distance for second. Caution once again bunched the field behind Love. On the restart Love kept control with Mann on the hunt. Coming to the white flag Mann sliped out of turn 4 allowing Lathroum to take second. Love had enough car to take the victory by four car lengths over Lathroum.

“The car was really tight tonight so I had to throw it into the corner to get it to turn, I messed up once but once I got the lead back I made sure I wouldn’t make another mistake gain,” commented Love.

Following Love to the checkers were Jamie Lathroum, Roland Mann, Ronald Cusic and Joey Love rounding out the top five. Jared Powell picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookieof the Race Award with a ninth place finish. Ray Love Jr. picked up an extra $100 bonus in the Morgan Race Engines Challenge for finishing in the top three with a Morgan International Engines power plant.

In other action Renee Weeks of Powhatan, VA drove a dominating race in leading all 25 laps of the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature holding off Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA off at the line to score her second win of the season and take over the Modified division point lead by 6 points over Page Harrison of Jetersville, VA. In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA won the drag race into turn 1 and muscling his way in front of Shawn Otey and then lead flag to flag to pick up his first win of the season and in the Dixie Chopper All American division Mark Cunningham of Glen Allen, VA took the lead from Stephen Childress on lap 2 of the 15 lap feature and then cruised on to take home the victory in dominating fashion.
