Never before has as many family members won races in one season at Sumter Speedway as the Horne family
has done this season. Roger (3rd from left) has recorded two wins this season while his sons (l-r) Marty , Mark

SUMTER, S. C. - With the 2005 season swiftly coming to a halt, the first of three special nights will take place this Saturday with an all-day affair, beginning at 8 a. m. with a garage sale for the benefit of the South Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation and ending that night with a big 30-lap special race in the popular Pro Stock division.

In between will be an afternoon of fun and games for the kids as well as grown-ups as the second annual Family Fun Day will offer games, contests and an auction will offer a county fair atmosphere. Many of the drivers will be on hand with their cars and will be available for picture taking and autographs.

At 7:30 p. m., the fun moves to the track with races in six divisions plus at intermission, C & C Recycling and Auto Parts will host a Power Wheels racing event for the kids. The first of these races was held last month and attracted 30 drivers of the vehicles powered by batteries.

The Pro Stock main event has been one of the most competitive classes of the six run at Sumter this year, even though James Stephens of Blythewood has captured nine of the 15 main events. He has waged several side-by-side wars with one-time winner and points leader Joey Ayers and four-time winner Johnny Welch. Stephens missed one race due to a migraine headache, and if he had been on hand and made the starting field that night, he would be in the points lead at this time. Ayers leads Stephens in the season championship race by 56 points. Others expected to be among the leaders Saturday night are Kevin Turner, Larry Waits and Brian Welch.

Another race that has really attracted plenty of attention is in the Mini Stock 4 division. Five-time winner Cody McAllister was the first driver to cross the finish line last week, but his car was protested and did not meet the rules and was disqualified. This gave David Hodge his third win of the season with seven-time winner Tony Rabon finishing second. Since McAllister received no points for the race, Rabon has moved 178 points ahead of McAllister on his way to his second track championship. The cars driven by Hodge and Rabon have been protested this year and the Hodge car was found illegal, but Rabon's car was legal, however. McAllister posted on a local forum this week that the cars of both drivers are illegal and he is having to compete against cheaters. In the meantime, Lane Cox, Jack Lambert and McAllister's girlfriend, Sissy Duke are watching the action as it goes on up front.

By picking up his fifth Pure Stock win, James Yost padded his points lead and now only has to make the field this week to win the points battle ahead of Karen Cooper. William Disher has captured four events, but has no chance of winning the championship. Others to watch are Len Caughman, Bubba Jones and Robbie Disher.

Banjo Duke has run away from the field in the Super Stock 4 division and wrapped up the championship two weeks ago. Last week, he recorded his seventh win of the season, finishing ahead of Donnie Austin. Chad Morris and Harry Pritchard are expected to be among the drivers leading the chase on the streaking Duke.

The Pure Street and Late Model T&L classes could not be much closer with Matt Holland and Robert "Duck" Pack leading their respective divisions by four points each.

By winning his second race of the season, Jody Truett vaulted from fourth place to second in the Late Model T&L championship chase as Pack continues to cling to the lead. One-time winner Brandon Hodge is third in points while three-time winner Randy Hill slipped from second to fourth. Others to watch in this very competitive class are Bubba Livingston and Robbie Disher.

Holland leads seven-time Pure Street winner Pete McKenzie by four points as well, but anything can happen in this event. Marty Horne picked up his first win of the season last week and became the fourth member of his family to win at the 3/8-mile dirt oval this season. Four-time winner Mark Bartlette, Mark Horne and one-time winner Adam Hill should offer plenty of competition.
