PIKEVILLE — Fayetteville's David Taylor tied the Wayne County Speedway single-lap record in qualifying, but Greensboro's Ray Tucker seized the checkered flag in the Super 7 Late Model 50-lapper Friday night.
Also appearing in Victory Lane were Kevin Beard of Bailey in Bombers, Donnie Odom of Princeton in Sportsman, Brandon Wells in Super Stock Four-Cylinder, Jim Shuffield of Fayetteville in Open-Wheel Modified and Buddy Isles Sr. in Thunder and Lightning.
Taylor posted a time of 13.76 seconds around the 1/3-mile track. But at the drop of the green flag, Tucker seized the lead with Taylor hounding. However, Tucker maintained his groove and the lead. The scarcity of cautions added to the suspense.
Jeffery Tyndall of Autryville threatened to take the point — but never got there. Taylor and Apex drivers Neal Sykes and Roger Lucas challenged, occasionally racing three-wide.
Tucker emerged with his seventh 2005 checkered flag. Tyndall finished a strong second, with Taylor third, Sykes fourth and Lucas fifth.
In Bombers, Beard started from the pole and landed his second victory of the season. Wilson teammates Gary Whitley and Tony Harrell claimed second and third, respectively.
Odom celebrated his first Sportsman top finish from the pole. Several cautions tightened the field in the 25-lap chase. But Odom pulled away from Henderson's Steve Pearson, a 10-time winner this season.
Billy Slater notched a season-best finish of second. Pearson settled for third, with Mark Dysart of Sanford fourth.
Isles ruled the 20-lap Thunder and Lightning main event from the pole. Isles withstood competition provided by Jerry McKeel and Jerry McKeel Jr. to win for the first time this season.
McKeel Sr. took second, while Joel Wilson, who has moved up from the Bombers division, placed third. Joey Macklin of Wilson salvaged fourth, followed by McKeel Jr.
Craig Shuffield captured the Open-Wheel Modified pole, but his dad's experience showed during the feature. Jim Shuffield stayed out front most of the way in racing to this third 2005 triumph
John John Montgomery charged to a runner-up finish, with Craig Shuffield third and Dale Erikson fourth.
Newcomer Wells ruled the 15-lap Super Stock Four-Cylinder main event from the pole. Wells fended a challenge from Fayetteville veteran Jim O'Neal, the scourge of the division, to notch his first victory.
O'Neal wound up a close second. Young gun Dustin Mitchell of Pine Level wound up third, with newcomers Ben Leone and Robert Wilson fourth and fifth, respectively.
More action is scheduled for Friday night.
