JH, I heard on the radio the other day that the steel blocks were going to run almost as fast as the SLM aluminum block engines. Like about 2 tenths different in speed. What was the actual qualifying speed for the pole sitter ?

it was a high 14. Not sure if it was the quality of cars are if it was the track conditions, the wheather or what the acutal reason was. I was expecting some much faster times than what we saw. But I do know that the second qualifier and race winner allan brannon last year in the same car ran around a 14.30. I dont think I was trying to pull the wool over any ones eyes (lol).. You have to remmber some of the times Ray tucker and some others who would have been leagal for this race has put up in the past.

Heard the same thing Ricky. I was there Friday night and I didn't see the Steel Blocks perform as fast as the SLM'S. Not from what I saw anyway. I was somewhere else on Saturday so I don't know what the deal was then.

Having walked across the track several times on Friday (don't know about Saturday), my uneducated guess would be the track conditions. The track felt very tacky and almost spongy, definitely more so than in the past - even at the end of the night.

On the small Clarys track I COULD NOT tell the difference between the Steel Head cars and the Supers.

they widened the back straight away about 1or 2 more grooves. My class the times were off about 3 or 4 tenths.

NO what I mean is, when you go to a track like Virginia Motor Speedway(1/2 mile) and the have Super Late Models, and Steel Heads LM you can tell the difference in the two classes, BUT on small tracks like Potomac, Natural Bridge, and CLARYS SPEEDWAY I can not tell the difference. Most cars there this weekend if I had not known they were steel heads I would have thought they were supers

That's why I prefer to watch (usually) tracks that are under 1/2 mile. When you get down to 3/8 mile and shorter, handling and driver become more important than on a half mile where you need a really strong engine to be competitive, IMHO. Higher speeds do not necessarily mean better racing ... if it did, we'd all be watching the Indy Cars and Formula One!

I think kevin hit the nail on the head. Sometimes tacky means slower times on the clock, but to me it also leads to better racing and mutli grooves. Also if all the times were off by 3-4 tenths I dont think my predication friday morning was off that much.
