SALUDA, VA – Ronald Cusic of Mechanicsville, MD used a little good luck to retake the lead on lap 20 and then showed he had enough car to hold off the challenges of current point leader Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, MD to take home the victory in the 35 lap Victory Lap Late Model feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway.
Ray Love Jr. started seventh but wasted no time to get to the front taking the lead from Cusic on lap 9 with an inside pass out of turn 2. Love looked to dominate the field as he pulled to full straightaway lead over Cusic and the rest of the field.
But on lap 20 Love slowed coming out of turn 2 with mechanical problems handing the lead back to Cusic. Once back under green Cusic worked to hold off Lathroum who was looking to get inside for the lead. Behind the two leaders the action was getting hot as Pat Wood made a charge from twelfth to gain a spot in the top five. By lap 30 Wood was in third but didn’t have anything for the top two as the laps wound down.
Cusic had enough car to hold off Lathroum for his second win of the season. ““I knew when Love went out with mechanical problems that all I needed to do was keep the car under me, this is just awesome to get another victory,” commented Cusic in victory lane.
Rounding out the top five were Jamie Lathroum, Pat Wood, Stevie Long and Sommey Lacey.
In other action Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA came back to the front after being sent to the rear from an earlier caution to take the lead from Bobby Bustamante of Chesapeake, VA as the two exited turn 4 heading to the checkers, picking up his second win of the season in dramatic fashion. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA took the lead on lap 5 and then held off Brian Dobie of Partlow, VA at the line for his fourth win of the season and in the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature John Imler of Edgewater, MD crossed the finish line as the winner in a tight race over Brain Maxey but both drivers failed post race inspection handing the win to Frank Addington of Matoaca, VA. It was Addington’s first career victory.
In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature Matt Morgan of Hughsville, MD picked up his first “Hot Lap” fast time of the year and inverted the top six qualifiers with the pill draw. That put Ronald Cusic starting on the front row along side Sommey Lacey of Clements, MD. On the drop of the green Cusic and Lacey raced into turn 1 side by side with Cusic taking control on the high side out of turn 2. Lacey wouldn’t give up that easy and kept peaking to the inside of Cusic. While Cusic and Lacey battled for the top spot Ray Love Jr. began his charge to the front from his 7th place starting position.
By lap 3 Love had worked his way into third. The races first caution came out on lap 4 for a spin in turn 4. On the restart Cusic got a great jump on Lacey and the rest of the field. For the next two laps Love stuck his fender to the inside of Lacey trying to take second and each time Lacey held serve on the outside. On lap 7 Love finally got enough grip on the bottom to take second. Once past Lacey Love closed on quickly on Cusic and on lap 9 got to the inside of the leader in turn 3 to take the lead as the two raced out of turn 4.
Over the next nine laps Love extended his lead to almost a full straight away over Cusic as Jamie Lathroum began his assault for second. On lap 20 everything went downhill for Love as his car began to encounter problems causing him to slow as he exited turn 2. With Love coming into the pits Cusci regained the lead with Lathroum, Lacey, Roland Mann and Stevie Long rounding out the top five.
On the restart a huge battle ensued between Long, Mann, Joey Love and Pat Wood for 4th with Wood coming out on top. With the battles behind him Cusic continued to lead Lathroum by a car length. Wood continued his charge to the front and took third from Lacey with five laps to go but couldn’t mount a charge to get past Lathroum for second.
With the laps winding down Cusic had enough car left under him to hold off Lathroum and pick up his second win of the season. Following Cusic to the checkers where Jamie Lathroum, twelfth starting Pat Wood, Stevie Long and Sommey Lacey rounding out the top five. Stevie Long picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his fourth place finish. Pat Wood picked up an additional $100 bonus in the Morgan Race Engines Challenge for finishing in the top 3 with a Morgan International Race Engine.
The Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Walker Arthur of Forest, VA set fast time for the ninth time in twelve races. He then inverted the top four with the pill draw. That put Roger Jamerson and Tim Shelton on the front row leading the field to green. Shelton muscled his way in front of Jamerson out of turn 2 to take the lead with Arthur and Bustamante close behind.
Shelton could only muster a four car length advantage at most over Jamerson as the top four cars raced nose to tail over the next 16 laps. On lap 17 a caution of a spin in turn 4 closed the field up on the bumper of Shelton. On the restart Jamerson got under Shelton heading into turn 1. The two were side by side and as they entered turn 2 thy touched sending both drivers spinning and to the rear of the field.
That handed the lead over to Arthur followed by Bustamante, Brad Rigdon, Donnie Owens and Vaughan Haywood. On the restart everyone jockeyed for position until another caution on lap 21 for a spin out of turn 2 closed the field back up on Arthur’s bumper.
Once back under green Arhtur and Bustamante began to pull away with Daren Bolac, Donnie Owens battling for fourth. Joining the battle was Shelton who had worked his way back form the rear of the field. On lap 24 the three battled intensely for fourth and as they exited turn 4 they touched sending Bolac spinning to the inside wall and done for the night.
On the restart Rigdon, Owens and Shelton went after each other for the third spot. On lap 24 the three were within inches of each other as they rocketed off turn 2. Heading into turn 3 Rigdon and Shelton went into the corner on the highside and Owens on the bottom. Shelton saw the opening and split the two out of turn 4 to take third setting out to catch Arthur and Bustamante. On lap 26 Arthur slowed with mechanical problems out of turn 2 handing the lead over to Bustamante with Shelton a good seven car lengths back.
With two to go Shelton had closed up on the back bumper of Bustamante and was pressuring him for the lead. At the white flag Bustamante still held a slight advantage over Shelton. The two raced into turn 3 and Shelton slung his car to the outside of Bustamante exiting turn 4 and nipping him at the line for the victory.
“I’m not sure what happened when me and Roger (Jamerson) got together, I’ll have to look at the tape to see but I drove a little made there at the end and just wanted this win real bad,” commented Shelton on the close win.
Rounding out the top five were new point’s leader Bobby Bustamante, ninth starting Brad Rigdon, thirteenth starting Donnie Owens and eighth starting Vaughan Haywood. Davis Lipscombe picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with a seventh place finish.
In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA set fast time and inverted the top eight drivers with the pill draw. That put Brent Bordeaux and Tommy Shiflet leading the field to green. They hadn’t made it to turn 1 when Shiflet missed a shift sending the car spinning into turn 1. The ensuing wreck collected eight cars in the process. Only one was unable to continue.
On the restart Bordeaux and Renee Weeks led the field back into turn 1, this time Weeks came out with the lead from the outside. But Bordeaux and Hamilton wanted the lead just as bad as they came out of turn 4 three wide. Weeks held on to the lead as Bordeaux and Hamilton battled it out for second. Hamilton disposed of Bordeaux and set out to get the lead from Weeks. On lap 5 Weeks bobbled just enough to allow Hamilton to her inside and to the lead.
Hamilton paced the field as Weeks, Brian Dobie, Bordeaux, Page Harrison and Eric Erwin wrestled over second through sixth. Erwin came out the big winner as he used the high groove to his advantage picking off Bordeaux and Weeks for third as Dobie went to second.
With two to go Dobie made a bid for the lead diving his car under Hamilton on several occasions. Each time Hamilton held him off by mere inches at the line. At the white flag Hamilton was just a half car length in front of Dobie, as they raced into turn 3 Dobie made one more attempt to get inside of Hamilton but the car was too tight to get a bite off the corner allowing Hamilton to get the win.
“I had to just close my eyes during that first caution, I thought I was going to be a part of it. We made it through and held on to get the victory so it was good night,” commented Hamilton.
Rounding out the top five were Brian Dobie, Eric Erwin, Brent Bordeaux and Renee Weeks. Brian Dobie picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his second place finish.
The Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature was a barnburner from the drop of the green as John Imler out dueled Frank Addington for the lead with Brian Maxey close behind in third. Maxey took second as the trio exited turn 4.
By lap 10 Imler had pulled to a six car length advantage as Maxey worked to hold off Addington and Cunningham for second. On lap 15 the top seven of Imler, Maxey, Cunningham, Addington, Hubbard, bob Terry and Tony Quade were nose to tail and pulling away form the rest of the field.
On lap 16 Imler worked the high groove as Maxey worked the bottom. The two would race side by side for the next several laps until Imler took back control. A caution on lap 23 set up a green, white, checkered finish and Imler looked up the challenge. As they raced to the white Imler had Maxey on his bumper. Maxey kept the pressure on and in turn 3 slung his car to the inside of Imler. The two raced door to door to the line with Imler picking up the close win. Or at least it seemed as both Imler and Maxey failed post race inspection handing the win to Frank Addington. Also failing inspection were Tony Quade and Davis Lipscombe.
Rounding out the top five were Keith Hubbard, sixteenth starting Rusty Steele, fifteenth starting Shawn Otey and Mark Wright. Mark Wright also picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with a sixth place finish.
