SALUDA, VA – Brian Staton of Chesapeake, VA came into Round 3 of the Victory Lap Late Model Challenge presented by BB&T at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway having won Round 2 of the four race Challenge Series. That set him up for a chance at some big bonuses should he win one or both of the remaining Series events. Staton did just that as he used a mistake by Ray Love Jr. of LaPlata, VA on lap 29 to take the lead and the eventual win to set himself up for a potential $15,000 bonus. The win guarantees Staton at least a $5000 bonus.
In other action Okey Synan, Jr. of Fredericksburg, VA picked up his career first victory in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature with a close win over Walker Arthur of Forest, VA. In the Al’s Auto Parts Chargers John Imler of Edgewater, MD picked up his third win of the season by six inches over Bob Terry of Stafford, VA in a photo finish and in the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature John Mosby of Doswell, VA continued his dominance of the division by picking up a close win over Bret Atkins of Saluda, VA.
In Round 3 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T Brian Staton started the night by setting fast time in his #26 Door Masters / Brady Outdoor Equipment / Coastal Lighting and Supply / Best Repair / Toro / Pontiac BRC Lazer III. He then inverted the top four with the pill draw. That put Ben Bowie and Stevie Long on the front row leading the field to the green. Long powered around the outside and took control out of turn 2 followed by Ben Bowie, Matt Morgan and Ronald Cusic.
Long started to pull away from the field and began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 9. The slower traffic allowed Bowie and Cusic to close in and battle for the lead. By lap 11 Ray Love Jr. had worked his way into fourth from his 20th starting position and was heading to the front quickly.
On lap 13 Love went outside of Bowie to take second. Love then caught Long on lap 16 trying both high and low on the leader but to no avail as Long had enough car to hold off the Round 1 winner. On lap 19 Love finally got enough bite on the outside out of turn 2 to finally take the lead.
With Love leading and seemingly in control Staton began his charge back to the front. By lap 20 Staton had moved himself back into fourth after falling back to ninth. One by one Staton picked off Bowie and Long to put himself fourth car lengths behind Love with ten laps to go. That put the two drivers eligible for bonuses in the top two spots.
A caution on lap 27 closed the field on Love’s back bumper with Staton, Long, Pay Wood and Bowie the balance of the top five. On the restart Staton tried to muscle his way under Love for the lead but Love had enough to hold him off. The two raced nose to tail until lap 29 when love slid up turn 2 and gave Staton the opening he needed to take the lead. A late caution with three to go allowed the field one more shot at Staton.
On the restart Love looked inside but couldn’t get underneath Staton to make the pass. While Staton and Love battled for the lead, Jamie Lathroum shot around the outside from sixth to take 4th over Bowie and Long.
Staton held on for a 3-car length victory over Love and now has a chance at winning a $15,000 bonus.
“He (Ray Love Jr.) made one mistake and if hadn’t made it I probably would have never got by him, he was fast and the only way I could make a run at him was hit the outside and that’s when I started passing cars and he was running the outside and I had no where to go until he made that one mistake and that was my move so I had to take it,” commented Staton.
“I think we got it in us,” added Staton when asked could he duplicate what his brother did in 2003 by winning the $15,000 bonus for winning three of four events.
Rounding out the top five were 20th starting Ray Love Jr. Pat Wood, 25th starting Jamie Lathroum and Ronald Cusic. Stevie Long picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his sixth place finish. Love and Wood each picked up a $100 bonus in the Morgan Race Engines Challenge by finishing in the top three and running a Morgan International Race Engine.
In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 30 lap feature Derek Scott of Chesapeake, VA set fast time in “Hot Lap” time Trials picking up a $100 bonus from Datacom Connections of Stafford, VA. Scott then inverted the top six drivers with the pill draw. That put Walker Arthur and Okey Synan, Jr. on the front row. On the drop of the green Arthur and Synan raced side by side into turn one with Synan emerging out of turn 2 the leader with a strong move on the top side.
Synan looked strong on the point but had Arthur and Time Shelton nipping at his heels for the lead. Caution on lap 5 closed the whole field up on Synan bumper. On the restart Arthur looked inside of Synan as they raced into turn one. That opened the outside for Shelton, which he took full advantage of by taking second.
On lap 11 Shelton tried the outside of Synan for the lead opening the door for Arthur to get inside and take second. The top three drivers began to pull away from the rest of the field with Synan doing everything he could to hold on to the top spot.
Synan paced the field as the laps wound down with Arthur fending off Shelton for second. Several late cautions gave Arthur a shot at taking the top spot but Synan’s car was up for the task and held off Arthur by .593 seconds to collect his career first win.
“They were all on the back door trying to get by, Roger Jamerson gave me some advice before tonight’s race on how to run the track and we took the advice and led every lap, getting a win here at Virginia Motor Speedway is the best thing you can ever possibly do in your career especially mine right now” commented Okey on his career first win.
Rounding out the top five were Walker Arthur, Tim Shelton, Vaughan Haywood and Roger Jamerson. Jack Foulkes picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his tenth place finish. Synan, Arthur and Shelton all picked up a $100 bonus from Datacom Connections.
In the Al’s Auto Parts Charger 25 lap feature it didn’t pay to be the leader. Brian Maxey and Chris Tatum led the field to green with maxey getting a huge jump and bolting to a six car length advantage. On lap 4 Maxey as he exited turn 4, Maxey’s car began to slow and came to a stop in turn 1 handing the lead over to Tatum. While under caution Tatum pulled his car to pit road handing the lead over to Shawn Otey. Otey lead the field back to green with Keith Hubbard, Bob Terry, John Imler and Brian Goodman in tow.
On lap 6, caution came out closing the field up on the bumper of Otey. After taking one pace lap Otey pulled on to pit road with transmission problems handing the lead over to Bob Terry. Once under green Terry began to receive pressure from Hubbard for the lead with Imler looking to take second. Imler got by Hubbard for second and began to run down Terry with the laps ticking away.
With the laps winding down Imler began to explore the outside groove. It seemed to work as the two raced to the white flag Imler got to the outside of Terry as they raced into turn 1. Imler kept applying the pressure as the two raced side by side into turn 3. Coming LRC off turn 4 Terry held a slight advantage but it was Imler with a great run off of turn 4 that nipped Terry at the line in a photo finish.
“I tell you Bob (Terry) drove a hell of a race, I don’t know his tires might have been going away there at the end but he drove me clean, he could have got up into me coming off of turn 4 and he’s a good guy and doesn’t drive like that and I try not to drive like that. We run a little softer tire tonight the track was tacky and there was still moisture up top and that is where I was running and putting that right rear up there in the moisture and is stuck,” commented Imler on the very close victory, his third of the season.
Rounding out the top five were Bob Terry, 13th starting Charles Evelyn, Keith Hubbard and 12th starting Mark Wright. Wright picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with his fifth place finish.
In the Dixie Chopper All American 15 lap feature Johnny Brooks and Marty Coltrian led the field to green. Coltrain took control from the outside. By lap 5 Coltrain had Mark Cunningham and the rest of the top five in tow and looking to get the lead. A caution on lap 9 put the field nose to tail for the restart. Heading into turn 1 Cunningham cut a tire racing with John Mosby. On lap 9 Mosby got to the inside of Coltrain to take the lead out of turn 2 only to give it back when caution fell for the second time in the race.
On the lap 11 restart Mosby gave Coltrain a bump while Bret Adkins went to the outside in an attempt to take the lead. Coltrain held both drivers off but for only a lap as Mosby got a nose under Coltrian in turn 2 to take the lead with Adkins going outside to take second.
Adkins wanted more and began to pressure Mosby for the lead but Mosby was able to hold off Adkins for his seventh win of the season and fifth in a row.
“It’s a lot harder to win form eighth, I had to drive extremely hard to get this win. It seemed like everyone was driving a little harder tonight,” commented Mosby. As in the previous four races, Mosby will get to start no closer than eighth. Rounding out the top five were Bret Adkins, Vernon Kirby, Mark Childers and .
