Jimmy McCormick of Dobson, NC 2006 Super Late Model Track Champion

RURAL RETREAT, VA – For three divisions Saturday marked the end of the points hunt for the track championship. Jimmy McCormick of Dobson, NC finished the Super Late Model race in third, ahead of second place points chase Lloyd Osborne of Johnson City, TN. This was the first year for the Super Late Model division at Wythe Raceway on a weekly basis. To McCormick, a seasoned dirt racer, this was still a special season.

McCormick’s fifteen year old son, Chase, is making his rookie season one to remember as well. C. McCormick is currently tied for the points lead in the Pro Late Model division with Troutdale’s Randy Taylor, also a seasoned veteran to dirt track racing. Taylor took home the win in the Pro Late Model division this past Saturday, giving him enough points to catch to McCormick and tie up the points lead. The Pro Late Models will race in the FASTRAK Crate Nationals this weekend, with their final points racing being the following weekend.

In the Open Wheel Modified division, another rookie made his presence known. Ron Lawson of Austinville swept the night, winning both the Open Wheel Modified feature event and the track championship. Lawson raced to two feature wins and eleven top five finishes. The Open Wheel Modifieds will be racing again this Saturday for the final race in the 2006 season. The points have been concluded, but Lawson will still have another shot at Victory Lane.

The Modified Mini and Truck divisions were combined this year with each class having their points tallied separately. Randy Kincer of Rural Retreat had a dominating season with seven feature wins. Kincer finished in the top five all twelve races, another amazing season by a previous track champion. Kincer will be finishing out the season in the Super Street division after claiming the Modified Mini track championship. Jimmy Buchanan of Wytheville dominated the truck division and wrapped up the points championship before the start of Saturday’s feature. Buchanan had over a fifty point cushion going into the final Modified Mini/Truck race.

The Pro Crate Late Models, Super Streets, Mini Stocks and Hornets still have races remaining in the chase for their points championship in upcoming weeks. Brian Coake leads the Super Street division, Gator Cornett is on top of the Mini Stock Points and Cody McMahan has a strong hold on the Hornet points.
This Friday and Saturday will be the Third Annual Crate Nationals presented by Blue Ridge Nissan and Marion Automotive Group. Friday will feature Crate Late Model Qualifying, practice session and a Super Street and Mini Stock feature race. Saturday will feature more Crate Late Model Qualifying, Heat Races, B-Main Feature and Super Street, Mini Stock, Open Wheel Modified, Hornet and Crate Late National Features.

One lucky fan and one lucky driver will each have the opportunity to win a brand new truck. Blue Ridge Nissan has put up a new Nissan Frontier and Marion Automotive Group has put up a new Chevrolet Colorado. Both trucks will be on display at the two respective dealerships until Friday afternoon.
