Tell me what kind of trans you have and I can help you better. Do you know what gear you have in the rear end? 9" ford? 10 or 12 bolt chevy? quick change? If I know these things I can help you better. All you gotta really do is multiply the trans gear by the rear gear. Ex: 3 speed saginaw with no lines with a 4.56 rear end gear.............in 1st the final ratio will be 12.99, 2nd 7.66 and 3rd 4.56. But you have got to know exactly what you have before you can calculate because Sag, muncie or what ever trans all are not geared the same. If you do not know what the rear is geared count the teeth on the ring gear and count the teeth on the pinion.

Identification and ratio information is provide below these groves are typically cut across the clutch spline on the input shaft:
Saginaw 3 speed
Number of ID Grooves ............1st ..............2nd ............3rd
No Groves ..............................2.85 ...........1.68 ...........1.00
1 .............................................2.54 ...........1.50 ...........1.00
2 .............................................3.11 ...........1.84 ...........1.00
3 .............................................3.50 ...........1.89 ...........1.00
Saginaw 4 speed
Number of ID Grooves ............1st ..............2nd ............3rd .............4th
No Groves ..............................2.84 ...........2.01 ...........1.35 ...........1.00
1 .............................................2.54 ...........1.80 ...........1.44 ...........1.00
2 .............................................3.11 ...........2.20 ...........1.47 ...........1.00
3 .............................................3.50 ...........2.47 ...........1.65 ...........1.00

camlobe is right with the ring and pinion but to further clarify it you have to divide the number of teeth on the pinion gear into the number of teeth on the ring gear. When you establish what rear end gear you have then you multiply that ratio times the transmission gear ratio to give you the final drive ratio which is what most racers will be refering to when talking gear.
Hope this helps.
