POINTS CHASE DOWN TO ONE RACE IN THE SUPER LATE MODEL AND MODIFIED MINI/TRUCK DIVISIONS
RURAL RETREAT, VA – Last Saturday was going to be the deciding race for the Super Late Model and Modified Mini/Truck points champion, but Mother Nature had other intentions for the two classes. Rains postponed the night’s double points racing events to this coming Saturday, August 26th.
Currently, Jimmy McCormick of Dobson, NC is leading the points in the Super Late Model division by a mere five points over Johnson City’s Lloyd Osborne. McCormick has two wins on the season, and Osborne took his first feature win last Saturday on Fan Appreciation night. Randy Taylor of Troutdale trails McCormick by twenty eight points and Tony Parks of Stuart sits in forth place, thirty three points behind the leader. Travis Greer of Marion could still take the lead after Saturday’s double points feature since he is thirty nine points behind McCormick. The winner in each division will be awarded fifty points with each sequential position dropping by two points.
McCormick’s son, fifteen year old rookie Chase is currently tied for the points lead with Jack Scott of Troutdale in the Pro Late Model division. McCormick has one win on the season and six top five finished. Scott has yet to score his first feature win, but has seven top five finishes. Taylor who is also racing for points in the Pro Late division sits in third, ten points behind the leaders. Scott Agee of Christiansburg is holding onto fourth, forty points out and Barry Arnold of Max Meadows sits in fifth, fifty three points behind the leaders.
In the Open Wheel Modified division, Ron Lawson of Austinville is the current points leader with a twenty point lead over second place driver RK Dix of Rural Retreat. Daniel Lyles of Marion sits in fifth, just three points behind Dix. Duke Bare of Meadowview is currently in fourth, thirty six points behind Lawson and Chris Pendleton of Morristown, TN rounds out the top five, two points behind Bare.
Brian Coake of Max Meadows holds the points lead in the Super Street division by nineteen points over Keith Griffitts of Sugar Grove. Mike Keith of Abingdon sits in third, thirty nine points behind Coake and Brian Moore of Wytheville holds onto fourth with over a one hundred point gap behind Coake.
In the Mini Stock division, Gator Cornett of Sugar Grove is leading the chase for the points by twenty nine points over second place driver Andy Jolliffe of Chilhowie. Michael Carnett of Sugar Grove sits one point behind Jolliffe and previous track Champion Doug Monday is currently in fourth, seventy five points behind Cornett. Josh Westberry of Fries rounds out the top five, just five points behind Monday.
Previous track champion, Randy Kincer is the current points leader in the Modified Mini division over Kevin Atwell, both of Rural Retreat. Kincer has a nineteen point lead over Atwell, but with the champion being decided this coming Saturday, all of that could easily chance. Luke Golding sits in third, sixty four points behind Kincer, and just out of reach of being able to take the championship. For the truck championship, Jimmy Buchanan of Wytheville has a one hundred and six point lead over the second place truck, securing him a truck track championship in 2006.
In the Hornet division, Cody McMahan of Chilhowie has a twenty five point lead after a dominating year. McMahan has nine feature wins on the season and eleven top fives of the thirteen races. Taylor Hayes of Marion sits in second, after also having a very consistent year, scoring one win and ten top fives. Pie Short of Abingdon is forty three points behind McMahan in third, Cody Hottinger of Rural Retreat is seventy points behind in fourth and Jake Eaton of Bland is seventy seven points behind in fifth.
