County Line in Late Models
Racing Story for County Line Raceway
on Saturday July 23

It was a very hot summer day in the middle of July ,but
it didn’t matter when the 3/8 mile County Line Raceway
opened its gates, the fans were in for something more hot
besides the humidity. No it was the hard banging and rubbing
that only racefans know that CLR provides every Saturday
night and to add to the racing card was the Super Late
Models and an Enduro race which made a very exciting weekend
of competition on the Eve Saturday before the Virginia
Sprint Series return for Round #3 and to put an egg in a nut
shell the fans definitley got their moneys worth Saturday
night at County Line Raceway.

The first feature race of the night was the 20 lapper
in the Super Stock V-8 division. The caution flag fell three
times as the six cars went to battle at CLR. The first two
cautions fell on Lap #3 and #12 when the #05 of Elm City’s
Mark McKenzie cut down a right rear tire putting him in the
pits. On the restart and pretty much throughout the race it
was the Chris and J.J. Show as they were trading the lead
all over the racetrack. The final caution fell on Lap #17
for #64 Johnnie Edmondson spinning in turn #2 that was when
#11 J.J. Pendergrass slowed before the caution light and
#R-5 Chris Ray was declared the race leader and went on to
steal away the victory from #11 J.J. Penergrass. Third spot
went to #05 McKenzie as #18 Macklin, #64 Edmondson and #97
Lamm was the full field rundown in that event to start the
night.
The second feature of the night was the 20 laps of
caution filled action in the Modified 4 Cylinder
division that had a total of five cautions and three of the
five were muti-car pile ups.Now to add another twist to the
show was the fact that some of the regular Super Stock 4
drivers also ran by just making a couple of changes to their
cars and they really made a remarking statement as the #8 of
Jason Horne and #D8 of Dustin Mitchell set on the front row
and were again super stock 4 drivers. If any body could
recieve a Goody’s Headache Powder Reward like NASCAR it
would have to go to Elm City’s #99 Michael Webb.He spun at
the beginning of the race and made his way through the field
in seven laps only to spin out again coming off turn #4 to
put him to the rear again and had to settle for a top 5
finish. The top five finishers was #8 Jason Horne taking
down the win. Second spot went to #03 Tom Ballance, third
spot was #46 Jesse Thorne, fourth was #97 Bill Winstead,
fifth was #99 Michael Webb and rounding out the top 10 were
#D-8 Mitchell, #09 Nicky “Puffy” Etheridge, #88 Massengill,
16th Birthday #L3 Liles and the #08 Clay rounded out the
field.

The Third feature race was the always fun to watch
Super Late Models which saw nine fast cars take the Green
flag and what fast race it was with the caution coming out
only four times. At the drop of the green it was #21 James
Batten totally dominating over everybody when suddenly as
one of the fans told me “they heard a pop” when he crossed
the finish line and slammed hard and I mean hard into the
outside retaining wall on Lap #6 thankful he walked away
unscaved but not able to continue as his car went on the
hook and behind the wall. The second yellow came out for a
“quickie yellow” when the #7 of Mark Boykin slowed off turn
#2. Third caution fell on Lap #22 when the #41 of J.P.
Cascell had mechanical problems in turn #3 and put out the
yellow for that. Now for some reason and don’t ask me but
the leaders seemed to be the guys to watch for problems with
less than 13 laps to go the #V1 of Spencer Liggons had
engine problems and his night ended early. When it was said
and done #07 of Bailey’s Britches Liles was no match to the
#47 of Elm City’s Bobby Bottoms as he went on to win the
second Super Late Model feature at CLR and how did he
celebrate his victory? By cutting up with his racing buddy
#35 of Stevie Bryant. Second went to #07 Britches Liles,
third went to #36 of Ronnine “Scooby Doo” Boykin, fourth
went to #03 of Greg Williams and fifth spot went
perspectively to #47G Glenn Bottoms who hasn’t ran a Super
Late Model in a long time. Well all I can say is “What a
Comeback!!”. Finishing in Sixth was the #V1 of Spencer
Liggons,Seventh spot went to the #41 of J.P. Cascell, eighth
spot went to the #7 of Mark Boykin and last position went to
the #21 of James Batten. Wow what a great show and the Super
Late Models will return for Round #4 August 13th.

It only took 14 minutes to complete the Thunder and
Lighting event but in the end it didn’t even matter as
Sharpburg #07 of Ken Corbitt went on to pick up another of
his many victories here at CLR the best battle on the race
track was between #L2 of Britches Liles and #56 of J.P.
Casell but that ended on Lap# 4 when he pulled it in behind
the wall again for mechanical woes on that car but returned
Liles started the race from the pole but #07 of Corbitt
passed the line the leader at Lap #1 and when it counted the
most the last lap as he went on to take the win. Second was
#07 Liles, third went to #56 Cascell, fourth went to #15 Lee
Brinson, fifth went to #61 Wade Ferrell and rounding out the
field were #32 Tim Coley, #43 Pat Ferrell, #47 Alan Worrells
who normally drives the #28 was the run down.

The Fifth feature was the Pure Stock 4 Cylinder and it
was a no contest as the #8 of Louisburg’s Blake House took
down the win and totally dominated the whole feature as it
only took 6 minutes to complete the event and the event went
caution free. Full field rundown went with #8 Blake House
winning, second went to #50 George Ballance, third spot went
to #44 Junior Johnson, fourth spot went to #44M of Jason
Morgan and to round out the field was the #33 of Brian
Medlin. The entries of Brian Andrews and Chris Ellington
were unable to start the feature.

Race event number Six was 15 Laps in the Pure Stock V-8
which saw #96 Michael Lamm and #21 of Gary Whitley put on a
never ending battle for the point until Lap #11 when #21
Whitley finally got around #96 Lamm off turn #4 to take the
lead only to lose it in turn #2 when he hit #23 of Scott
“John Deer Green” Taylor as he was entering the pits. At the
restart #7 Kevin Beard was no contest what so ever as #96 of
Michael Lamm went to take the win. Second spot went to #7
Kevin Beard, third spot went to #44 of Jerry “Confederate”
Willaims, fourth spot went to #56 Wesley Cogdell, fifth spot
went to #9 of David “Flame” Myers and rounding out the rest
of the field was #39 Forte, #29 Waters, 21 Whitley, #23
Taylor and #4 Cascell.

Final event of the night was Fourth round of the Enduro
divison which saw 50th Birthday man #9 David Earl Myers take
the win. Second spot went to #45 Gerald Lewis. Third went to
#44 of Barry Moore and last spot went to #48 of Timbo
Johnson and gave the fans a show as he rode up the wall in
turn #2. Don’t forget the Virginia Sprint Series will be
back for Round #3 as well as the Regular Divisions. Gates
open at 5PM and Cars Hit the Track at 7PM SEE YA THERE!!!
